The City of Annapolis is seeking a dedicated and skilled Equipment Operator I to join the Department of Public Works. In this role, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment, including dump trucks, street sweepers, front-end loaders, and backhoes. This position involves both technical equipment operation and manual tasks necessary to support public works infrastructure, including sewage, water mains, and roadway maintenance. This position also requires working outdoors in all extreme weather conditions and availability for emergency overtime work.
Responsibilities
Heavy Equipment Operation: Operate dump trucks to transport materials (asphalt, sand, dirt, stone), street sweepers, sludge/water tank trucks, front-end loaders, and backhoes.
Utility & Infrastructure Support: Assist with water main and fire hydrant repairs, roadside trash pickup, and the loading/unloading of materials and equipment.
Snow & Ice Control: Operate dump trucks for salting and snow plowing operations to ensure safe roadways during inclement weather.
Maintenance & landscaping: Operate tractors with mower attachments, cut grass, weed eat, and remove trees as needed.
Equipment Care: Perform daily and weekly lubrication, minor maintenance, and adjustments on assigned equipment, while maintaining accurate daily work logs and vehicle checklists.
Safety & Compliance: Secure job sites for safety, correct subcontractor work, and operate equipment in compliance with traffic rules and safety standards.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Skill in operating tractors, trucks, and fleet equipment in all weather conditions.
- Ability to operate and repair medium to heavy machinery, including commercial mowers and construction equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to make minor adjustments to equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic rules and the ability to follow oral and written directions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
- Experience: One (1) year of related experience in the operation of machinery and construction equipment.
Special Qualifications
- Licensure: Possession of a valid Maryland Class “B” Commercial State Driver’s License (CDL).
- Screening: Consent to chemical substance screening consistent with Federal, State, and City guidelines.
Physical and Visual Requirements
- Work outside year-round.
- Physical ability: strength and agility sufficient to lift and maneuver heavy objects such as heavy tools and equipment, manhole covers, storm drain grates, and to climb into and operate large equipment, trucks, etc.; ability to withstand working outside in all extreme weather conditions.
- Visual ability: sufficient to operate heavy equipment and trucks by both day and night, to observe unsafe conditions of roadways, to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc.
