Duties and Responsibilities
- Utilize a variety of materials, tools, and equipment for repair and maintenance of structures and grounds.
- Perform minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in‑kind fittings and fixtures.
- Perform minor carpentry repairs, including constructing, installing, repairing, and replacing doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim, and cabinets.
- Perform routine maintenance at different sites and visitor facilities, including cleaning restrooms and making minor repairs as needed.
- Receive, unload, and process incoming shipments, reporting discrepancies and damage.
- May perform painting, masonry work, roofing, welding, or assist higher‑grade workers with utility system maintenance.
- Operate a light truck to transport supplies and materials to and from work sites.
Physical Demands
Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms; stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment up to 50 lb.
Working Conditions
Performed inside and outside; exposure to dirt, spray, fumes; often in inclement weather; may wear heavy protective equipment and clothing.
Conditions of Employment
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Must meet Selective Service registration requirement for males.
- Must sign an affidavit affirming possession of a valid state driver's license; submit photocopy of license and, if required, certified driving records.
- Must wear a uniform in compliance with NPS standards; uniform allowance provided.
- May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
- Travel may be required; up to 3 nights per month at Olympic NP or Haleakala NP, and up to 10 nights per month at Grand Canyon‑Parashant NM.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old, or at least 16 with high‑school completion or equivalent; or have completed a vocational training program; or be enrolled in secondary school with permissible work arrangements.
Qualifications
Applicants must satisfy the 2‑point level on the screen‑out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements listed. This position requires demonstration of knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
- Screen‑out factor (ability to perform work with minimal supervision).
- Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
- Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
- Use of measuring equipment.
- Interpretation of instructions and specifications (including blueprint reading).
- Use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of materials.
Education
No substitution of education for experience for WG positions.
Additional Information
Recruitment incentive may be authorized for newly selected employees. Temporary seasonal employees must not exceed 1 039 hours in a service year; exceeding 1 040 hours results in loss of non‑competitive rehire eligibility.
