Job Responsibilities
Talent Development
Develop a high‑performing team.
Identify and hire underwriting talent.
Train new Underwriters and coordinate training to optimize growth and loss ratio performance.
Provide continual coaching and feedback to a team of Vertically focused Underwriters for the Corix business, focusing on growth, service and profitability goals.
Develop and establish Vertical Centers of Excellence (COEs), including regular forums and reporting, and ensure COEs influence underwriting rules, coverage changes, guidelines and pricing.
Retention and Talent Development – elevate performance, upskill talent as necessary.
Coordinate with the Corix Leadership Team to ensure metric reporting assesses progress to goals, and provide regular feedback for optimal results.
Profitable Growth
With input from the Corix Leadership Team and CUO, drive underwriting strategy and guidelines.
Execute national plans for the Corix business: marketing initiatives, broker relationships, new business growth activity, and meet/exceed budget expectations.
Lead Monthly and Quarterly Business Review efforts.
Manage the team and business to key underwriting KPIs such as quote rates, bind rates, renewal rate change, etc.
Manage UW productivity, partnering with the Corix Leadership Team to increase straight‑through processing.
Ensure industry‑leading responsiveness to trading partners.
Obtain senior‑level underwriting authority and take referrals for the team, working closely with Practice Leader and CUO on complex referrals.
Portfolio Management
With input from actuary, CUO and peers, oversee and be accountable for the Corix business P&L and portfolio volatility.
Execute product management strategies with underwriters and brokers to achieve profitable growth, aided by the Corix Leadership Team:
Lead identification and execution of profitable expansion opportunities.
Deliver rate and book mix according to business plans and actuarial targets.
Continuously drive portfolio optimization by reshaping underwriting rules, pricing and guidelines.
Develop and deliver a regular underwriting review forum (Underwriting MBR/QBR).
Analyze reports to identify growth and loss drivers and make data‑driven recommendations.
Sales and Broker Management
Work with Business Development Manager to build and maintain underwriting pipelines nationally.
Maintain strategic travel for all UWs and provide quarterly marketing strategy to SVP, Corix and Head of Strategic Integration.
Be nationally visible: influence practice leads, media, broker presentations, conferences, and drive marketing and new business development.
Actively manage renewal workflows nationwide and deploy standardized tools to secure maximum retention.
Oversee underwriting, pricing and negotiation of accounts to win new business and retain renewals, consistent with Hiscox guidelines and profitability targets.
Develop new relationships within existing brokers and maintain the national broker base.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Provide feedback to insurance innovation, CUO, product, actuarial, claims and marketing on ways to remove barriers, enhance performance, and increase partner value.
Person Specification
Eight or more years of insurance underwriting experience in multiple commercial P&C lines, management liability and/or cyber and E&O (preferred).
5–8 years in a team‑lead or UW managing role.
Proven sales experience with brokers: pipeline, prospecting, negotiation and closing.
Strong portfolio management experience, including wholesale and retail broker relationships (tech and/or life sciences preferred).
B.A./B.S. in Business, Finance, Economics, Risk Management or related field (preferred).
Professional underwriting designation preferred (e.g., CPCU, RPLU).
