Job Description The incumbent is a senior‑level faculty member in cancer epidemiology research at USF, serving as Director of the Cancer Control, Prevention, and Epidemiology Program at the Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute. The role combines teaching, scholarship, service, and program leadership, collaborating with faculty across USF Health to lead translational and population‑based cancer research initiatives. The director reports to the Chair of the Department of Epidemiology, meeting annually to discuss the upcoming assignment year and review performance.
The incumbent is expected to obtain extramural funding to cover a minimum of 40% of annual base salary plus benefits costs beginning the fourth year of employment.
Responsibilities Instructional Duties: 20% FTE Teach courses in cancer epidemiology or epidemiologic methods at the master’s or doctoral levels; advise graduate students; chair and serve on graduate student committees. Contribute to undergraduate teaching and research mentorship as expertise allows. Teach or co‑teach three courses per year, with research support able to replace one or two courses if required.
Research/Scholarship Duties: 70% FTE Serve as Director of the Cancer Control, Prevention, and Epidemiology Program, shaping and implementing the program’s strategic vision, fostering collaborative research between USF and TGH investigators, mentoring faculty, trainees, and staff, and guiding translational and population‑based initiatives that enhance cancer control and equity. Represent the program in institutional planning efforts and contribute to elevating its national visibility and impact. Create and maintain an externally funded research program focused on cancer etiology, prevention, early detection, treatment outcomes, survivorship, or health equity, using molecular, clinical, behavioral, environmental, or policy‑relevant approaches. Secure competitive funding to support research activities and meet the required salary support level by the fourth year of employment. Collaborate across departments and institutions on interdisciplinary initiatives, publish scholarly work, mentor graduate students, and represent the department in college‑ and university‑level strategic planning related to cancer prevention and public health.
Service Duties: 10% FTE Engage in service activities at the departmental, college, university, and professional levels, including participation in faculty governance, committees, and special initiatives. Serve as a formal mentor to junior faculty. Contribute to community and public health service efforts by applying professional expertise to local, regional, or national initiatives that align with the department’s mission and the field of cancer epidemiology.
Administrative Duties Restricted to individuals with formal college‑wide administrative appointments by the Dean. Direct administrative effort related to specific course/program concentrations should be reflected in the Instruction category. Direct administrative effort related to a specific research project should be reflected in the Research category.
Essential Functions The creation, dissemination, and translation of knowledge through collaborative research; teaching and advising graduate students; and active engagement in professional and community service. Serving as Director of the Cancer Control, Prevention and Epidemiology Program at TGH Cancer Institute, collaborating closely with faculty in the Department of Epidemiology and USF Health.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service.
Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Professor.
Two years of sustained accomplishment at the Associate Professor level as an Epidemiologist at an accredited university – or the equivalent in a government, military, or research setting.
National and/or international record of excellence in independent and/or collaborative research in cancer epidemiology supported by substantial publications.
Record of sustained extramural funding in the areas referenced above.
Record of excellence in teaching, including a clearly defined teaching philosophy, participation as a major professor for thesis and/or dissertation committees, and successful direction of master’s and doctoral candidates.
Record of substantive contribution of service to their university or organization and to the field, profession, and community.
Record of collegiality in their university or organization.
Preferred Qualifications
Current extramural funded research providing a minimum of 40% salary support.
Record of leading strategic research initiatives.
Record of mentoring junior faculty.
Record of successfully leading multidisciplinary cancer‑related research teams or institutional programs that include cancer center, medical center, or medical system engagement.
Demonstrated record of collaborative cancer‑related research partnerships involving cancer centers, medical centers, or health systems.
Classroom and/or online teaching experience as an epidemiologist at the graduate level, particularly in cancer epidemiology or related public health topics.
Record of applied innovative teaching approaches in academic and/or practice‑based settings.
Leadership in professional or scientific organizations related to epidemiology, cancer research, or public health.
Research program that aligns with the strategic priorities of the Department of Epidemiology and the TGH Cancer Institute.
