The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory (ECL) at DTSC provides expertise in method development, quality assurance, data evaluation, and analysis of environmental samples. As Section Chief, the incumbent will: organize, supervise, and direct a multidisciplinary scientific staff to carry out laboratory operations, including analytical testing, method development, maintenance of equipment and supplies, and other research projects in support of DTSC programs, CalEPA, and external stakeholders. Review and approve staff analytical reports to ensure data quality objectives are met. Manage laboratory operations, including ISO/IEC 17025 Quality Management System, laboratory information management system (LIMS), data review and interpretation, reports review and approval, procurement of instruments and equipment, expenditure tracking, safety, laboratory infrastructure, and technology innovations. Independently plan, design, and manage specific research studies (e.g., source attribution, fingerprinting, known‑unknown identification) and characterization of chemicals of concern in environmental and biological samples, consumer products, and emerging waste streams using current techniques and state‑of‑the‑art technologies to develop methods and analytical testing guidelines. Coordinate and develop collaborative projects and interagency agreements with CalEPA BDOs and other government entities to provide method development and testing services. Desirable Qualifications We Look For
3 years of research experience working independently on projects preferred. 3 years of experience with mass spectrometry and other analytical chemistry techniques preferred. 1 year of experience working under a Laboratory Quality Management System preferred. 1 year of experience with program management preferred. 1 year of experience managing and/or supervising staff preferred.
