Deputy Chief of Service, Medicine Planned Care The closing date is 28 December 2025
The Deputy Chief of Service will lead a Tri comprising the Deputy Director of Operations and Deputy Divisional Director of Nursing and Quality, and will be accountable to the Chief of Service and Divisional Tri. In addition, they will be supported by dedicated finance, information, People and OD and risk management staff.
The post-holder provides strategic and clinical leadership to the Specialty Medicine part of the Division of Medicine (see structure chart). Working with their Tri, the Divisional Tri and Unscheduled Care Tri, they will be accountable for ensuring that the team provides effective and efficient patient services of the highest quality within available resources and contribute to the strategic direction of the Division. Strong clinical engagement is central to success in this role. The post-holder will need to deputise for the Chief of Service when required.
Main duties of the job
Service delivery - provision of effective and efficient patient services, of a high quality, responsive to patient and commissioner needs whilst achieving key access and other targets.
Financial management - achievement of income plans, effective budgetary control, delivery of Divisional Financial Sustainability and high standards of financial probity.
Service improvement – establishment of a culture of, and effective processes to achieve, continuous improvement in the quality and efficiency of services, with appropriate involvement from patients and the public. This should be undertaken in by linking with the Trust Quality Academy.
Clinical governance - ensuring that robust processes are in place to minimise risks to patients and staff whilst optimising clinical effectiveness.
Planning - preparing and implementing short and longer term plans consistent with the Trust's strategy, covering inter alia service standards and volumes, workforce, equipment, estates and income.
Leadership - inspire teams and individuals whilst ensuring good communications across the Division. Delegate to and support sub‑divisional teams with effective performance management arrangements.
Partnership – contribute fully to the leadership and management of the Trust as a whole, working for the common good with other Divisions, Trust‑wide teams and Trust Directors. Build effective working relationships with GPs, stakeholders and other partners.

Job responsibilities It is anticipated that 2 PAs or the equivalent hours (8) will be allowed in job plans or the working week for the role. There is an additional responsibility payment. The precise arrangements will be agreed with the Divisional Tri. The responsibilities of the post holder do not of course fit neatly into a precise time pattern.
The post-holder will be a senior clinician with at least three years experience, credibility and ability to command respect of clinical and non‑clinical professionals.
They will need personal commitment, drive and capacity to lead through a challenging agenda and deliver against agreed outcomes. Continual service transformation and improvement is essential, including a willingness to tackle difficult issues firmly but sensitively.
In addition, the post holder will have strong strategic vision, operational management skills, sound judgement, with the ability to think creatively and laterally to achieve outcomes. He or she will be a good communicator with a proven record at building teams, negotiating and motivating people as well as performance management.
The post-holder will build a wide range of contacts both within and beyond the Trust, and advise key stakeholders, including senior managers, on clinical issues with in depth knowledge of governance routes for Trust Leadership Team approval.

Staffing ensure that the Division organises well to achieve the appropriate level of clinical cover and job plans which meet the needs of the individual and the Trust.
