Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Classification Supervisor (SC18)
Assists the Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Custody Assessment in the supervision and administrative responsibility for the Classification, Records, Community-Based Pre-Release, and Community Corrections Programs. Interacts with inmates, detainees, and staff in the course of assignments. Exercises supervision and administrative responsibility for the Records Office. Performs related work and duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to the Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Custody Assessment.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises staff assigned to the Classification, Release Programs, and Records Office staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Determine the discharge dates for all inmates.
Assist in the classification of all inmates sentenced to the House of Correction. Review, analyze, and assess all relevant factors involved with the assignment of inmates. Responsible for all administrative duties involved with the supervision of division employees.
Responsible for all duties pertaining to the proper maintenance of inmate records, including sentence computation for all commitments; posting all jail credit submissions; posting and monitoring all earned good time; tracking all outstanding warrants; posting and tracking all court trips; interacting with other criminal justice agencies; supplying reports as requested; tracking the CORI records; monitoring compliance with the sex offender registry information; and the collection of DNA with CODIS.
Ensure that all division staff are trained appropriately.
Conduct Classification Boards with inmates in inmate housing units on a scheduled basis, including Administrative Segregation/Discipline Boards.
Meet with inmates/detainees on a daily basis, identifying and assessing personal, classification, parole, and programmatic issues affecting their sentence and their re-entry into the community.
Tour inmate/detainee housing units regularly, identifying and resolving potential problems not immediately apparent to the inmates/detainees.
Conduct DNA testing: proper identification, drawing blood, and processing necessary paperwork for submission to the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory.
Serve as Institutional Grievance Coordinator, interacting with inmates/detainees and staff in the course of assignment.
Assist in the proper maintenance and care of all inmate records.
Supervise the intake caseworkers as assigned in compiling the inmate service programs.
Submit periodic summary reports to appropriate agencies and such other persons as directed by the Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Assessment.
Perform all administrative responsibilities assigned and exercise flexibility to learn new duties and skills as assigned.
Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of the criminal justice system, houses of correction, jails, courts, probation, parole, etc.
Understands the role of Institutional Community-Based Programs and Community Corrections in a county jail and House of Correction.
Ability to properly supervise assigned personnel.
Ability to work in a large correctional facility with all staff and inmates.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to complete moderate to complex levels of qualitative and quantitative analyses.
At least two years of experience or Master's Degree in Criminal Justice.
