Center Attorney, Medical Legal Partnership Join the Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) as a Center Attorney to lead an interdisciplinary team in a medical‑legal partnership that provides legal information to community members in East Harlem and Brownsville. This role supports the City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) as part of the Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW).

About the Role The NYC DOHMH seeks a Center Attorney who will manage day‑to‑day operations of call‑in and walk‑in medical‑legal partnership centers, recruit and supervise volunteers, screen cases for referral to legal services organizations, conduct outreach, and maintain data and reporting systems. The position will be based at the Brooklyn and East Harlem Neighborhood Health Bureaus, working closely with community partners.

Responsibilities

Oversee operations of medical‑legal partnership centers.

Recruit and coordinate volunteers and schedule staff calendars.

Supervise volunteers during regular and evening/weekend hours.

Screen cases and refer to appropriate legal services organizations or bar associations.

Develop and enforce policies for legal referrals.

Conduct outreach to attract new volunteers and visitors.

Build partnerships with community-based organizations, local officials, and legal services groups.

Organize virtual professional development training and “Know Your Rights” workshops.

Maintain data collection and reporting using approved computer platforms.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Support overall goals and mission of the department and organization.

Requirements

Admission or pending admission to the New York State bar.

Experience managing referral and case‑management practices for social‑service support.

Experience providing counseling, outreach, and consultation services.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trust with community partners.

Experience working with diverse populations.

Excellent written and verbal communication; presentation skills a plus.

Strong organizational skills and follow‑through to meet deadlines.

Experience monitoring programming implementation and adjusting processes based on data.

Excellent attention to detail with an appreciation for broader goals.

Ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team.

Preferences

Bilingual in Spanish or French.

Experience working in a legal setting.

Understanding of social determinants of health and their impact on underserved communities.

Commitment to supporting communities with systemic oppression and bias.
