Location Department of Maryland State Police, Automotive Safety Enforcement Division 6601 Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie, MD 21062

Main Purpose of Job To supervise Maryland Authorized Inspection Stations, ensuring conformance to rules, regulations and procedures governing vehicle safety inspections in Maryland. Provides guidance and keeps station personnel informed of new policies and procedures that affect the inspection program.
Position Duties
Conduct monthly audits of inspection stations’ records and examine inspection equipment for compliance.
Verify proper posting of license cards, procedure charts, station signs and mechanics’ lists; ensure visibility and currency.
Confirm all inspection equipment is current, calibrated and in working condition.
Check that all paperwork is properly completed, contains required information and is accurate.
Verify certificates are issued in numerical sequence and secure their storage.
Ensure personnel listed are employed and qualified to inspect the class of vehicle for which the station is licensed.
Confirm Safety Equipment Repair Orders (SERO) are certified and in numerical order.
Take appropriate administrative or enforcement action for any deficiencies noted during audits.
Conduct investigations and inquiries, take enforcement action for violations of rules and regulations, including covert or surveillance operations.
Perform as a Duty Officer at Headquarters and assigned field offices, assisting the public and allied agencies.
Administer the mechanic’s demonstrative ability test and ensure competency.
Investigate initial station and mechanic applications, complete Division reports, and administer tests.
Conduct salvage inspections and testify in court or administrative hearings concerning violations.
Perform post‑collision investigations to determine defective components; may result in civil or criminal litigation.
Confiscate suspended registration plates flagged by MVA; advise owners on procedures.
Perform other duties as requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high‑school equivalency certificate.
Six months of experience performing mechanical repair, maintenance or inspection of motor vehicles.
Desired or Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of the Maryland Safety Inspection System (MSIS).
One (1) year of experience in mechanical repair, maintenance or inspection of motor vehicles.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Employees may be required to operate a motor vehicle and must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in Maryland.
Special Requirements
Substance abuse testing as per Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09.
Initial drug screening, physical examination, criminal background investigation, and polygraph examination before permanent appointment.
Selection Process Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be considered. Successful candidates are placed on the Eligible List and remain eligible for at least one year.
Examination Process Assessment includes rating of education, training and experience; may require a qualifications supplement, interview, background investigation, polygraph, and substance abuse testing.
