Sr. Engineer, M&S, Systems Performance – FTI

As a Systems Performance Modeling & Simulation Engineer in the R&D group, you will develop advanced physics‑based and empirical modeling and simulation environments for electrical, thermal, and mechanical systems used in distributed energy resources and power distribution. You will collaborate with subject‑matter experts, product strategy teams, and systems engineers to create accurate and efficient simulations that meet requirements and support product development. Your expertise will drive innovation and performance improvements in distributed energy and power distribution systems.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.

5+ years of experience in systems simulation.

Proficiency in time‑domain simulation software such as MATLAB, Simulink, or similar tools for pure simulation or real‑time operating platforms.

Knowledge of multi‑physics modeling software such as Simscape, Simcenter Amesim, GT Suite, or similar.

Proficient in hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL), model‑in‑loop (MIL), and software‑in‑the‑loop (SIL) simulation platforms, including integration of plant and controls models.

Experience with HIL platforms including dSpace, speedgoat, NI, or others for testing of controls systems.

Strong understanding of renewable energy systems including solar, wind, power conversion, and battery energy storage systems.

Knowledge of power distribution concepts including uninterrupted power supply, power converters, switchboards, and other power electronics.

Familiarity with thermal management systems for battery energy storage, HVAC systems for power distribution enclosures, and their characterization as required for performance‑level modeling and simulation.

Demonstrated implementation of real‑world power generation and distribution problems into complex modeling and simulation platforms.

Demonstrated development and implementation of modular component models with scalable flexibility for various levels of simulation fidelity.

Preferred Requirements

Advanced degree in electrical or mechanical engineering with demonstrated simulation experience.

Strong understanding of related regulatory frameworks and industry standards related to the relevant energy technologies: Microgrid, Power generation, and Energy storage.

Experience with Python, C++, or similar environments for development of optimization tools and controls logic.

Experience with machine learning models generated from data.

Experience with integration of techno‑economic analysis with systems modeling and simulation.

Experience with development of SIL, MIL, and HIL platforms for verification and validation of controls software.

Experience using version control for modeling and simulation, including Git or other similar tools.

Computational Fluid Dynamics software experience.

Travel: 5‑10%

Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 7 AM – 5 PM. Work may be performed at any time on any day of the week to meet business needs.

Work location: Menasha, WI. On‑site position requiring presence in the office 2‑3 days per week.

Key Responsibilities

Develop physics‑based modeling and simulation environments for a variety of electrical, thermal, and mechanical systems for distributed energy resources and power distribution.

Conduct product architecture trade studies and optimization to ensure maximized performance and minimal costs.

Integrate cost, weight, and specification data of components, systems, and renewable energy fuels into simulation models for techno‑economic analysis of architecture options.

Collaborate with subject‑matter experts to characterize components and systems in a simulation environment and communicate analysis results.

Collaborate with product strategy and systems engineers to develop models and simulations according to requirements.

Develop, enhance, and implement advanced tools to streamline workflows, optimize processes, and improve overall team efficiency.

Develop proof‑of‑concept controls algorithms to support architecture trade studies and provide functional recommendations to software development teams.

Utilize DOE, optimization methods, and data‑driven modeling and analysis tools.

Use models and simulation platforms to verify and validate controls software.
