Position: Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD)
Location: East Bay: Berkley, Oakland, Emeryville
Hours: Full-time, 8‑hour day shift, hybrid
Brief Overview Under the general supervision of the Chief Dosimetrist, the Clinical Chief Physicist, and the Director of Radiation Oncology Operations, the Medical Dosimetrist develops optimal treatment plans for cancer patients that maximize dose to the tumor while minimizing dose to normal organs, in collaboration with the radiation oncologist. Dosimetrists also provide support for patient care, staff, and resident education.
What You Will Do
Design optimized patient treatment plans using computer or manual computation to deliver prescribed radiation dose and spare critical structures.
Identify and contour normal and dose‑limiting structures using CT, MRI, PET, or other imaging data sets.
Create reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery, including DRRs, CBCTs, and other IGRT methods.
Supervise or assist in simulations and tumor localization using imaging devices.
Supervise or assist in fabrication of compensation filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam‑modifying devices.
Supervise or assist in production of molds, casts, and immobilization devices.
Advisory role to radiation therapists on immobilization, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and treatment or imaging parameters.
Perform calculations for accurate dose delivery, document all pertinent information, and verify mathematical accuracy.
Provide technical support to the Medical Physicist in radiation safety, machine calibrations, quality assurance, and equipment maintenance.
Operate and perform quality assurance on the treatment planning computer(s) under the Chief Dosimetrist.
Assist in brachytherapy planning and dose calculations; may assist with radioactive material handling.
Utilize radioactivity monitoring devices to perform assays.
Teach applied aspects of medical dosimetry to students, radiation therapists, and residents.
Participate in clinical research, continuing education, quality improvement processes, and other incidental duties as needed.
Education Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university.
Experience Qualifications
Required: Previous experience as Senior Dosimetrist (job title discontinued) at Stanford Health Care as of 8/31/14.
Or possess any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates eligibility for the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board examination within two (2) years of appointment.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, tumor pathology, radiobiology, radiation physics, and radiation safety.
Knowledge of medical dosimetry techniques and procedures.
Proficiency with treatment planning systems and related computer applications.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for patient, family, and team interaction.
Critical thinking and problem‑solving ability.
Ability to operate and perform quality assurance on treatment planning systems.
Understanding of radiation safety principles, NRC regulations, and other regulatory agencies.
Mathematical skills: algebra, trigonometry, introductory calculus.
3‑D visualization skills for treatment planning.
Licenses and Certifications
CMD – Certified Medical Dosimetrist.
