Summary
The Interventional Cardiologist Staff Physician is an academic physician responsible for carrying out operations of the Cardiology Section of the Medicine Service by primarily supervising the care of the Cardiology patients in the setting of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
Qualifications To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
rather - they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
Proficiency in spoken and written English

The staff physician collaborates with the Section Chief to determine the mission and objectives of the Section
The incumbent understands the Section priorities and objectives and facilitates accomplishment of the objectives in collaboration with the Section Chief
In addition to clinical matters - the Staff Physician participates in the education - training - and research missions of the Section and Service.The position is primarily responsible for the care of Cardiology patients in the setting of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab
The position supervises Cardiology fellows - Internal Medicine residents and students and is responsible for providing appropriate education and supervision for these trainees
Practices independently - using professional judgment and expertise to make decisions about services and treatment provided to veterans and their significant others/family members
Incumbent is given authority to make his/her own work assignments within the program area to which assigned
Consults with the supervisor as needed and with colleagues to develop knowledge and apply agency policies and practices to new matters
His/her work is reviewed for technical adequacy and conformance with procedures and practices applicable to the subject
Uses initiative and resourcefulness in deviating from traditional methods or trends and patterns to develop new methods - criteria - and proposed new policies
Practices at an advanced level and independently gathers relevant information to guide practice
Reports to the Chief of Medicine through the Cardiology Section Chief
Effectively communicates with and utilizes other disciplines (e.g. - nursing - medicine) to facilitate treatment planning and implementation
With few exceptions - participates effectively in team meetings - treatment planning conferences - etc
Collaborates with divergent multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care
Effectively communicates with and utilizes community agencies to facilitate treatment - discharge planning - and continuity of care
With few exceptions - gives evidence of having regular contact and interaction with a variety of community agencies and resources
Collaborates with a variety of community agencies and engages in problem resolution activities
The employee's relationship with supervisors - co-workers - patients - visitors - and the general public is consistently courteous and cooperative in nature - and overall contributes to the effective operation of the case management program
Any failure in this area is limited - minor and has no significant adverse impact on the Service
He/she anticipates and avoids potential causes of conflict and activity promotes cooperation among co-workers
Willingly accepts additional and special assignments that are necessary to meet program goals or customer needs
