Base pay range $44,000.00/yr - $52,000.00/yr
Basic Function To manage, communicate, supervise, plan and carry out activities which meet the needs of all residents.
Essential Duties
Planning and implementation of individual and group activities.
Schedules events that promote physical, cognitive, social, and emotional well‑being.
Activities provided during days, evenings, and nights.
Utilizes community resources within and outside of the facility.
Carries out activities as part of care.
Incorporates residents' interests into activities.
Gives residents opportunities for choices and self‑expression.
Identifies and provides adaptive devices for those with sensory deficits (e.g., large‑print books, tape recorders).
Promotes self‑esteem and social interaction.
Identifies and provides activities for those with special needs (e.g., depressed, terminally ill, bedridden).
Encourages participation and involvement of all residents.
Posts monthly and weekly schedules throughout the facility.
Directs updates to the schedule and bulletin boards.
Prepares for and participates in resident care activities.
Completes and updates resident assessments timely.
Provides activities that relate to residents' interests before they come to the facility.
Provides opportunities for residents to learn new skills and develop new abilities.
Maintains a clean work and storage area.
Uses proper body mechanics.
Follows infection control procedures.
Observes resident safety during activities.
Charts legibly, with standard grammar and punctuation.
Adheres to legal requirements and proper policies and procedures in documentation.
Coordinates religious services relevant to residents' needs and varied faiths.
Accompanies and assists clergy as needed.
Prepares sites and materials for events.
Maintains equipment safely and functionally.
Treats residents and staff with respect.
Adheres to all facility and department safety policies.
Provides consistent supervision of activity aides (e.g., duties, documentation, work).
Gives clear and specific instructions to activity staff.
Provides timely evaluations and appropriate disciplinary actions.
Adjusts and schedules activity staff to accommodate resident needs and code requirements.
Possesses and applies knowledge of state/federal guidelines to activity planning.
Informs appropriate personnel of identified needs or changes.
Stays within established budget.
Participates in A.A. as directed by Administrator.
Identifies needed areas of staff development and communicates with Service Director.
Responds appropriately and in a timely manner to questions or concerns regarding activities.
Meets with relevant parties monthly and as needed to discuss changes.
Contacts local newspaper regarding press.
Directs writing of facility communications.
Recruits, orients, and supervises staff.
Assesses recruitment needs and makes recommendations.
Recruits, interviews, and hires necessary activity staff.
Orients and instructs staff in facility policies and procedures.
Qualifications
No convictions for abuse, neglect, mistreatment, or misappropriation.
Prompt and regular availability.
Bachelor's degree in recreation therapy and eligibility for registration as a therapeutic recreation specialist with the national therapeutic recreation association.
Two years’ experience in a social or recreational program within the past five years, one year of which in full‑time patient activities within a healthcare setting.
Occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant meeting certification requirements by the American occupational therapy association.
If not a qualified activity coordinator, must receive at least a monthly consultation from a qualified activity professional.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to read, write, and make simple calculations.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Requirements Note: In terms of an 8‑hour workday, “Occasionally” equals 1% to 33%; “Frequently” 34% to 66%; “Continuously” 67% to 100%.
Bends, stoops, squats, crawls, climbs, reaches above shoulder level, crouches, kneels, balances, pushes/pulls.
Lifting requirements: up to 10 lbs (occasionally), 11–24 lbs (frequently), 25–34 lbs (occasionally), 35–50 lbs (occasionally), 51–74 lbs (occasionally), 75–100 lbs (occasionally).
Simple grasping, firm grasping, fine manipulation.
Working on unprotected heights, around moving machinery, exposure to temperature, humidity, dust, fumes, gases, automotive equipment.
Working Conditions
Works in well‑lit and noisy environment.
Subject to involvement with personnel, visitors, state and federal agency personnel.
Occasionally subject to hostile, emotionally upset situations.
Provided with necessary protective equipment.
Frequent change between hot and cold work.
