Activity Director

ALIYA Healthcare Consulting Basic Function To manage, communicate, supervise, plan and carry out activities which meet the needs of all residents.
Essential Duties
Planning and implementation of individual and group activities.
Scheduling events that promote physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
Providing activities during days, evenings, and nights that support resident wellbeing.
Utilizing community resources within and outside the facility to enrich programs.
Carries out activities that are part of care plans.
Incorporates residents’ interests into activities and offers opportunities for choices and self‑expression.
Identifies and provides adaptive devices for those with sensory deficits (e.g., large‑print books, tape recorders).
Promotes self‑esteem and social interaction with peers.
Encourages participation and involvement of all residents.
Posts monthly and weekly schedules throughout the department.
Directs updates to the schedule and 0. boards.
Prepares for and participates in resident care meetings and daily care.
Completes and updates resident assessments in a timely manner.
Provides activities that relate to residents’ interests before their arrival.
Provides opportunities for residents to learn new skills and develop new abilities.
Maintains a clean work area and storage.
Uses proper body mechanics and follows infection control procedures.
Observes for resident safety when in resident care.
Charts legibly, with standard grammar and spelling.
Adheres to legal requirements and proper policies and procedures in documentation.
Coordinates religious services relevant to resident needs and varied faiths.
Accompanies and assists clergy as needed.
Prepares sites and materials for services.
Maintains equipment in safe and functional condition.
Treats residents and staff with respect and professionalism.
Provides consistent supervision of activity aides regarding duties, documentation, and work.
Gives clear and specific instructions to activity staff.
Provides timely evaluations and appropriate disciplinary actions.
Adjusts and schedules activity staff to accommodate resident needs and code requirements.
Possesses and applies knowledge of state/federal guidelines to activity operations.
Informs appropriate personnel of identified needs, changes, and updates.
Stays within established budget.
Participates in A.A. as directed by Administrator.
Identifies needed areas of staff development and communicates with service Director.
Responds appropriately and in a timely manner to questions/concerns regarding activity operations.
Meets with monthly and as needed to discuss changes and concerns.
Contacts local newspaper regarding press.
Directs the writing of facility documents.
Recruits, orients, and supervises activity staff.
Assesses needs regarding retention and recruitment of staff; makes recommendations to leadership.
Recruits, interviews, and hires needed activity personnel.
Orients and instructs staff in policies and procedures of the facility and activity department.
Qualifications
No convictions for abuse, neglect or mistreatment or for misappropriation of funds.
Prompt and regular attendance.
Has a bachelor's degree in recreation therapy and is eligible for registration as a therapeutic recreation specialist with the national therapeutic recreation association.
Has 2 years’ experience in a social or recreational program within the past 5 years, one year of which was full‑time in a patient activities program in a health care setting.
Is an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant who meets the requirements for certification by the American occupational therapy association.
If not a qualified activity coordinator, must receive at least a monthly consultation from a qualified activity consultant.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Ability to read, write and make simple calculations and follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Requirements Employee’s job requires the following basic physical activities.
Weight lifting up to 100 lbs.
Bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching above shoulder level, kneeling, balancing, pushing/pulling.
Lifting requirements: 0-10 lbs occasionally, 11-24 lbs frequently, 25-34 lbs continuously, 35-50 lbs occasionally, 51-74 lbs frequently, 75-100 lbs continuously.
Supervision Receives supervision from Administrator and provides supervision to staff and volunteers of the activity department.
