About the Role
The Assistant Controller plays a critical role in ensuring accurate accounting, reporting, and internal control processes across warehouse and logistics operations. This position oversees day-to-day accounting tasks, leads monthly close and reporting activities, supports the annual operating plan (AOP), and drives continuous improvement across inventory accuracy, freight cost control, and operational efficiency. The role partners closely with finance, operations, supply chain, and corporate accounting teams to ensure financial results align with business objectives and operational performance.
Key Responsibilities
Assistant Controllership
Maintain accurate financial records for distribution operations and ensure compliance with company accounting policies. Support the implementation of standardized accounting processes and internal controls across locations. Review and complete account reconciliations; ensure accuracy of all balance sheet accounts. Monitor cash balances, optimize positive cash flow, and remit excess funds to corporate. Support ERP upgrades, integrations, and systems improvements. Partner with Corporate Accounting and FP&A to provide data for the AOP process.
Financial Reporting
Lead timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes. Prepare and review financial reports summarizing key operational metrics (inventory turns, freight expense, distribution costs, etc.). Perform financial analysis to ensure accuracy, identify trends, and uncover cost-saving opportunities. Develop and maintain processes for "addback" treatment following company guidelines. Partner with Corporate Accounting and FP&A to deliver meaningful variance analysis.
Inventory & Distribution Cost Management
Monitor and reconcile inventory balances. Collaborate with operations to improve cycle-counting accuracy. Track and analyze freight costs to identify optimization and savings opportunities. Work with logistics teams to track incoming shipments supporting sales forecasting.
Internal Controls & Compliance
Implement and maintain internal controls related to inventory, freight billing, and warehouse operations. Partner with Corporate Accounting to ensure segregation of duties and strong compliance practices. Ensure adherence to company policies, GAAP, and regulatory requirements. Support annual external audits by preparing documentation and explaining distribution-related balances.
Team Collaboration & Development
Partner with distribution and supply chain leadership to align financial outcomes with operational priorities. Train and develop accounting team members, supporting their growth and expanding responsibilities. Collaborate with accounting peers at other locations to streamline processes and share best practices. Foster a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or CMA preferred. 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in distribution, logistics, or manufacturing. International freight experience is a plus. Strong understanding of GAAP and operational accounting. Experience with ERP systems and advanced Excel skills required. Background in inventory management and freight accounting preferred.
