Assistant Controller - Heavy Civil Construction
A leading heavy civil construction firm is seeking a hands-on
Assistant Controller
to support financial operations and ensure accurate, timely accounting across multiple projects and entities. Reporting to the Controller, this role supports general ledger management, project accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls while partnering closely with project teams and leadership. We're looking for someone with a
can-do attitude , strong problem-solving skills, and a continuous improvement mindset.
Key Responsibilities
Support all accounting operations: GL, job cost, payroll, AP/AR, fixed assets.
Assist with month-end and quarter-end close and preparation of financial statements.
Review project profitability, job cost accuracy, WIP schedules, and cost-to-complete forecasts.
Partner with the Controller on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
Provide guidance to staff accountants and support team development.
Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies.
Coordinate with auditors, tax partners, and bonding agents during year-end activities.
Monitor cash flow, billing cycles, receivables, and payables.
Identify and implement process improvements to streamline accounting operations.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including construction accounting.
Strong understanding of job cost accounting, percent-complete revenue recognition, and project-based financials.
Experience with construction ERP systems (Vista, Sage 300 CRE, or similar).
Deep knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.
Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
Preferred Skills
Experience with multi-entity consolidations and intercompany transactions.
Familiarity with AIA billing, retention, and lien requirements.
Understanding of state-specific construction compliance and tax regulations.
