Job Title
Application Engineer
Location Auburn Hills, MI
Base Pay $35.00/hr - $38.00/hr
Summary The Application Engineer is responsible for the integration of the Transmission Assembly into Vehicle Applications, collaborating with manufacturing, end‑users (vehicle engineering, calibration). He will ensure vehicle application data is correct across vehicle platforms, review change requests, generate compliance reports, and coordinate with DREs and multi‑functional teams throughout vehicle programs and launches. The Application Engineer drives decisions impacting the transmission.
Key Responsibilities
Lead all external interfaces between the transmission and vehicle platform, including packaging and functional requirements.
Develop the Applications Matrix with all interface requirements for programs across variants and vehicle platforms.
Coordinate packaging studies with each vehicle application to ensure all clearance requirements are met and lead adaptation design studies and freezes.
Update and coordinate approvals of International Product Specification releases, owner’s manuals & CP, and compliance report standards.
Negotiate requirements with vehicle platforms based on product limitations and capabilities.
Own the Transmission Technical Specifications (TTS) and communicate application‑specific requirements to the team (e.g., max torque, NVH, FE, tire size, FDR selection, mass, etc.).
Define and track alignment to robust vehicle‑level and system‑level/sub‑system functional objectives.
Coordinate external design changes that require platform approval; perform TOS as required.
Support pilot builds, EOL test, VIN marking, and build issues.
Lead Build Readiness tasks (instrumentation plan, dyno support).
Coordinate COE assessments of bulletins and AT engineering response to bulletins.
Manage prototype hardware procurements and ED&D requirements.
Manage Build Readiness Team (BRT) for prototype orders.
Lead shipping & receiving parts/transmissions for builds to/from suppliers.
Required Qualifications
Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree preferred.
5+ years experience on transmission or driveline components with OEM and/or tier 1/2 supplier.
Solid understanding of powertrain / engine / transmission operation and components.
Excellent problem‑solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
Experience leading multiple complex projects simultaneously.
Some travel required to suppliers and corporate transmission / vehicle assembly plants, including Canada & Mexico.
Understanding of powertrain system adaptation into automotive vehicles.
Green/black belt in DFSS desirable.
Experience with CAE/CFD on powertrain structures.
Hands‑on involvement in repair/modification of a vehicle or similar technical project.
Solid understanding of casting and injection moulding processes.
Experience with electric motors (manufacturing and quality process) for automotive applications.
Experience with DFMEA and DVP&R.
High proficiency in English (speaking, reading, writing).
