The Senior Technical Product Manager in the Technology Innovation Department plays a pivotal role within the product development team, collaborating closely with the UX Research and Design, Content, Engineering and Program team members assigned to each program. Together, they strive to uphold technical product excellence in civic technology, operating within the specific constraints of the MBTA.

The L3 Senior Technical Product Manager is responsible for a wide variety of product management tasks primarily in prioritization, strategic roadmapping, and team operations related to a complex technical product or multiple products simultaneously.

Technical Product Management Capabilities

Build and execute on a complex product roadmap or roadmaps for multiple products. Develop, document, and clarify the problems the product solves for in a roadmap. Ensure work aligns with MBTA and TID priorities. Maintain a prioritized product backlog.

Leverage quantitative data and user research to prioritize work. This includes prioritizing work from sprint to sprint and maintaining a backlog of tasks in collaboration with research, design, tech and program teams. Effectively communicate priorities and acceptance criteria across levels and job functions.

Develop a deep understanding of stakeholder priorities and the applications included in the portfolio. Become familiar with the needs of users and stakeholders, technical architecture and features of the web application, and how to communicate about those things with the product team and with MBTA leadership.

Prioritize the needs of users throughout the delivery process, in partnership with the program and product development teams.

Product Management Leadership

Ensures alignment among product team members

Participates in interview and evaluation of team member candidates

Present product team’s work at department-wide presentations and rituals

May represent the department at external events

Push TID to be Better

Be a committed, vocal, collaborative member of TID and push for TID to do better in any/all dimensions of its work.

As a member of TID, this role is responsible for leading, practicing and upholding TID’s working agreements, which are essential to the department’s success.

Available to work as per assignment by the MBTA twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as directed by supervisory staff for severe weather conditions, emergencies or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.

Minimum Education

Bachelor degree

Five (5) years experience in product management

Demonstrated proficiency in product management best practices

Experience managing products that involve a combination of software, design, stakeholder, and/or vendor management

Experience achieving buy-in from internal and external stakeholders

Experience with agile best practices and modern task management and communication tools (such as Asana, Notion, Slack)

Experience working collaboratively on a cross-functional team, including Engineers, UX Designers and/or Researchers

Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into technology needs

Preferred Experience and Skills

Experience or interest in public sector, transportation agency, and/or civic technology team.

Knowledge of transit data standards (such as GTFS, GTFS-RT, TODS, TIDES)

Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to translate both for technical and non technical audiences

Strong analytical thinking and problem solving abilities

Strong collaborative mindset

Ability to define a hypothesis and approach both quantitative and qualitative data to find your own answers

Attention to detail

A High School Diploma or GED with an additional seven (7) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.

An associate degree from an accredited institution an additional three (3) years of directly related experience substitutes for the bachelor’s degree requirement.

A master’s degree in a related subject substitutes for two (2) years of general experience .

A nationally recognized certification, or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one year of experience.

Job Conditions
