Director of Business Development

position, which may be filled remotely or in any of our locations. The primary role of this position is to drive revenue growth of the firm, enhance brand awareness through key initiatives, and manage the Business Development and Proposals Teams throughout the U.S.

Responsibilities

Lead the development, execution, and review of strategies and related initiatives for the firm’s practices and lawyers.

Drive related revenue generation initiatives, including client targeting, market research, responses to RFPs, and client relationship reviews.

Partner with communications, brand, and recognition teams to develop and execute strategic visibility initiatives and build brand awareness.

Lead team efforts related to strategic key clients, providing direction, infrastructure, KPIs, and metrics for initiatives.

Build, manage, and lead a highly effective team of marketing and business development professionals across the U.S.

Establish and maintain relationships with firm‑wide industry leaders, practice group leaders, managing directors, and other stakeholders.

Collaborate across teams to elevate matter collection and streamline knowledge management processes for client‑facing materials.

Drive cross‑functional projects to increase efficiency, collaboration, communication, and visibility for both the department and the firm.

Identify and pursue cross‑selling opportunities by working with the Business Development Team.

Develop and implement strategies and activities to expand existing client relationships and generate new business.

Ensure consistency in messaging and best practices throughout the department and firm through staff development and training.

Share best practices across industry and practice groups to maximize productivity of marketing and business development efforts.

Coach, mentor, and develop the team, setting performance standards and monitoring performance.

Position Requirements

4‑year degree with major coursework in marketing, communications, or a related field (Master’s preferred; industry certifications preferred).

15 years of progressive experience in marketing and business development, including leading company‑wide initiatives in a multi‑office setting, preferably in a professional services firm.

Strong business development skills: setting priorities, planning, organization, follow‑through, delegation, negotiation, and budget management.

Ability to motivate attorneys and develop business development plans.

Experience providing high‑level client service at all levels of an organization.

Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to produce compelling proposals, collateral, research reports, and presentations.

Forward‑thinking with proven ability to deliver solutions to complex challenges.

High level of maturity and confidence to interact with sophisticated internal and external clients.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and business development technology, tools, processes, and innovation to drive revenue and efficiency.

Outstanding interpersonal, relationship‑building, and communication skills; ability to build consensus and generate excitement for initiatives.

Team‑first approach with a proven track record of managing and mentoring a geographically diverse team.

Strong leadership skills to guide, manage, and inspire the team.

Ability to develop and implement effective strategies aligned with the firm’s overall business objectives.

Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.

Strong collaboration and facilitation skills to work across departments.

Ability to work independently and delegate resources effectively.

High initiative and critical‑thinking skills to exercise independent judgment and manage multiple priorities.

Creative thinker open to multiple approaches and collaborating with leaders to execute plans.

Ability to manage and lead change initiatives related to talent and people management.

Understands current legal market trends, news, and innovations.

Compensation and Benefits Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience. The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. The anticipated salary range for this position is $250,000 to $300,000, with the final offer dependent on the candidate’s location. The range does not include a discretionary bonus, which is non‑guaranteed and dependent on individual and firm performance.
