The Pharmacy Director oversees all pharmacy operations within the hospital, ensuring safe, effective, and compliant medication use across inpatient and outpatient services. This leadership role combines clinical expertise with administrative responsibility to support patient care in a resource‑limited environment.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Direct and supervise procurement, storage, dispensing, and monitoring of medications.

Maintain cost‑effective operational aspects of the department in cooperation with administration and ancillary personnel.

Provide leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental goals and objectives.

Manage performance of employees, counsel and coach staff, and take appropriate disciplinary action for policy infractions.

Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other providers to optimize therapeutic outcomes.

Recruit, train, and evaluate pharmacists, technicians, and support staff.

Manage pharmacy budget, control costs, and negotiate vendor contracts.

Monitor and maintain operating expenses, including salaries and capital expenses within budgetary guidelines.

Procure all medications for outpatient pharmacy use.

Maintain drug inventory at levels consistent with needs and ensure out‑dated drugs are not available for use.

Promote accuracy and precision at all levels of work.

Develop and maintain up‑to‑date policies and procedures for all aspects of drug control and pharmacy services.

Plan, organize, supervise, and directly provide pharmacy services consistent with hospital needs.

Perform selection, training and evaluation of personnel in the provision of pharmacy services.

Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and standards set by regulatory and accreditation bodies.

Represent the facility in all state, federal regulatory audits, insurance audits, and visits.

Perform duties of the staff pharmacist.

Protect patients and staff by adhering to infection‑prevention protocols.

Provide presentations and other informative activities on drug‑related topics to the healthcare community and the general public.

Represent the department at meetings, passing communication between team members and executives as needed, and plan and conduct regularly scheduled department staff meetings.

Job Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or PharmD from an accredited school of pharmacy.

Registered Pharmacist in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy.

2-3 years of experience as a pharmacist.

Prior hospital pharmacy experience preferred.

Certified Immunizer.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association.

Proof of completion of the Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or within 6 months of the start date.

Adherence to all training requirements mandated by federal, state, and professional licensure and regulatory standards.
