Director of Maintenance
Overview Transdev North America seeks a Director of Fleet Maintenance to provide technical expertise and strategic direction for technical support at two vehicle maintenance locations in San Diego County. The role is pivotal in ensuring the safety, reliability, and cost‑efficiency of the vehicle fleet and equipment. The Director will oversee the maintenance department, managing labor, inventory, compliance, and vendor relations while driving continuous improvement through best practices and a culture of safety and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
Support both maintenance facilities with technical and OEM support.
Ensure all maintenance team members receive professional training on fleet vehicles and components, including OE‑provided troubleshooting software.
Develop and implement vehicle maintenance training programs and curricula.
Coordinate and track in‑house and vendor‑led training functions.
Establish and enforce Zero Emission Vehicle maintenance policies and procedures.
Lead work related to Field Service and Technical Support, High Voltage Vehicle Safety Standards, and OEM collaborations.
Create technician development plans aligned with ASE certification programs and continuous improvement goals.
Partner with all maintenance managers to assess training needs and development opportunities.
Monitor internal repair and vendor repair bulletins, recalls and update training programs accordingly.
Develop apprenticeship programs and support regional training centers.
Required Skills & Knowledge
Technical skills related to transit, motor coach and paratransit buses.
Presentation skills that engage the team in learning.
Minimum ten (10) years of recent progressive heavy equipment maintenance experience.
Four (4) year technical degree or equivalent experience preferred.
Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) / EVSE deployment experience.
Advanced onboard diagnostics and data logging (including ZEV).
Telemetry and predictive analytics knowledge.
ASE Advanced Level certifications (T or H series).
Training with ZEV OEMs (powerplant, batteries, etc.) and CNG experience preferred.
Comprehensive understanding of vehicle design, electronics, overhaul of transmissions and heavy‑duty engines, and other bus components.
Proficiency with diagnostic equipment and OEM programs such as INSITE, WTEC, Wabco.
Strong knowledge of regulations affecting mechanics and maintenance operations.
Autonomous, self‑directed, with strong research and resource identification abilities.
Mathematical analysis and tracking of maintenance information.
Knowledge of warranty processes.
Ability to pass a pre‑employment physical examination and drug test.
Qualifications
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Valid CDL Class B (or higher) with passenger and airbrake endorsements preferred.
7+ years of experience in repair and maintenance of heavy‑duty automotive and transit equipment.
3+ years of supervisory experience.
Broad understanding of all mechanical systems related to heavy‑duty transportation vehicles.
Familiarity with laws and regulations associated with safe operation of maintenance facilities.
Proficient with Microsoft Office.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Available to work shifts and flexible work schedules as needed.
Subject to DOT drug testing and physical if applicable.
Physical Demands
Approximately 20% of the work is performed outdoors and may involve climbing, lifting, balancing and walking.
Travel may be required domestically.
Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds.
Requires use of arms, repetitive hand‑wrist motion, legs and overall body movement: climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, standing, bending and handling materials.
Benefits
Competitive compensation package: minimum $140,000 – maximum $170,000.
Vacation: minimum two (2) weeks.
Sick days: 5 days.
Holidays: 12 days; 8 standard and 4 floating.

Required Working Conditions Office and shop environment with moderate noise levels.
