Position Overview Michigan Paving and Materials is seeking a Claims Manager who will manage and complete various claims and processes throughout the organization and third‑party systems associated with the Risk and Safety Department. The role reports to the Director of Safety and Risk Management and focuses on enhancing consistency in claim and risk management. The position is based at the Michigan Paving and Materials Canton Corporate Office with opportunities for remote work.

Responsibilities

Provide oversight of Workers Compensation and Liability claims, assisting in investigation, valuation, and resolution for both non‑litigated and litigated matters.

Mitigate the organization’s exposure to risk by coordinating all claims‑related activities with local management and safety managers.

Review first‑ and third‑party claims for irregularities, accuracy, and completeness; request additional information as required.

Maintain updated records and prepare required reports.

Resolve bona fide claims at the lowest possible cost using risk‑management and risk‑transfer techniques.

Partner with internal stakeholders, legal counsel, and third‑party administrators (TPA) to drive WC and liability claim resolution.

Direct the program to ensure efficient claims handling, gather data for record keeping and loss forecasting, and estimate the financial value of claims.

Support the Regional Director on all aspects of claims administration, loss forecasting, compliance, and analysis to assist in loss reduction and employee safety.

Contract Risk and Compliance

Identify contract risk and lead improvements to mitigate operational and contractual risk.

Assist the Vendor Compliance Manager in collecting, reviewing, and submitting contractual and insurance documents for contractors and vendors.

Submit claims and company incidents into internal and third‑party systems such as Riskonnect, Travelers, Liberty Mutual, ISNet, etc.

Maintain documentation and submit required information for corporate risk & safety reporting and annual certification requirements.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, risk management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Minimum five (5) years of experience managing liability claims with an insurer, TPA, or risk‑management function.

Demonstrated skills working with outside advisors, insurers, TPAs, and legal partners.

Professional designations such as CCP, AIC, ARM or paralegal experience are a plus.

Exposure to the building‑materials, construction, or manufacturing sectors is preferred.

Work Requirements

Must be at least 18 years old.

Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen and criminal background check.

Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures.

Willingness to work independently, within a team environment, and assist with other duties as required.

Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required and possess a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

Expertise in workers compensation and liability claims management.

Strong ability to gain stakeholder trust and create alignment around contractual terms to reduce risk.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong problem‑solving ability.

High ethical standards and professionalism in representing the company.

Ability to work independently and resolve issues under pressure.

Effective collaboration with diverse teams.

Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills and a sense of urgency.

Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times. Other duties as directed by management.

Physical Requirements

Communication by telephone and in person.

Use of a computer for word processing, email, and document preparation.

Possibility of prolonged sitting.

Driving to selected job sites and offices to meet stakeholders.

Work Environment

Normal office working conditions.

Potential for work outside normal business hours.
