Brief Description: The Inpatient Medical Coder will provide support to the Department of Veterans Affairs by analyzing and abstracting patient health records, then assigning appropriate alpha‑numeric codes for diagnoses and procedures. This role requires expertise in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). This opportunity is part‑time, requiring a minimum of 20 hours per week scheduled at your discretion from Monday through Sunday.
Position Responsibilities/Duties
Working knowledge of CPT, ICD‑10, and DRG assignment and ability to code PTF charts in ICD‑10
Ability to meet the minimum per‑hour productivity, including related procedures, with 95% accuracy
Active credentials as a certified coder and completion of all requirements to maintain active credentials
Ability to follow site‑specific coding guidelines that may vary from site to site
Formal training in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pathology and disease processes, pharmacology, health record format and content, reimbursement methodologies and conventions, rules and guidelines for current classification systems (ICD, CPT, HCPCS)
Experience in data validation, reporting, reviewing and abstracting health record information, maintaining coding compliance, ensuring CPT/AMA and ICD codes and modifiers support clinical documentation for reimbursement
Familiarity with ICD nomenclature, CPT, SNOMED, HCPCS, JCAHO, DSM, DRC, medical and procedural terminology, anatomy and physiology, laboratory results, and disease processes
Familiarity with coding in VIP as well as 101, 401, 501, 601, and 701 screens
Performs other related duties as assigned
Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum of 2 years of inpatient coding experience
At least 6 months of Veteran Affairs or other relevant coding experience—either as a VA employee or with another government contractor supporting the VA
Experience using VIRR/WebVIRR
Commitment to a minimum of 20 hours per week, scheduled at your discretion from Monday‑Sunday
Certification Candidates hired must possess one of the following certifications:
American Health Information Management Association:
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) / Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) / Certified Coding Specialist‑Physician (CCS‑P)
Clinical Modification/Procedure Coding System Trainer
American Academy of Professional Coders:
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) / Certified Professional Coder‑Hospital (CPC‑H)
Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC)
