The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Critical Access Facilities collaborates with facility leadership and system executives to develop and implement clinical strategies, processes, and personnel plans that uphold IU Health’s mission and core values while meeting the unique needs of rural communities.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain collaborative relationships between medical staff and leadership.

Oversee clinical policies and procedures to ensure quality and consistency.

Drive performance improvement initiatives and ensure exceptional patient experience.

Advocate for community health and promote public health initiatives.

Address healthcare disparities and improve access to care in rural areas.

Provides oversight to four Critical Access Hospital: IU Health White Memorial, IU Health Frankfort, IU Health Tipton, and IU Health Jay

Reports to: Administrator – Chief Operating Officer

Candidate Qualifications Candidates for the position will be evaluated according to the following criteria and competencies.

Education and Experience

Requires a Medical Degree, is board certified, preferably with active practice, and is licensed to practice in the state of Indiana. Must meet all criteria for membership of medical staff.

Requires course work in the areas of Health Administration, Health Financing, Insurance, and/or Personnel Management.

Requires 10 years of experience as a practicing physician with at least 5 years of leadership experience.

Requires experience in quality and patient safety, strategic planning, and community relations.

Requires experience with the efficiencies of medical practices.

Requires experience leading quality‑improvement initiatives.

Experience with medical staff affairs preferred.

Requires knowledge of state and national regulatory agency guidelines.

Characteristics and Capabilities

Requires the ability to build relationships with physician leadership including academic chairs and lead physicians through influence.

Requires interpersonal negotiation and presentation skills with the ability to lead groups and programs.

Must be a visionary with the ability to think in a positive and creative manner.

Strong command of organizational and managerial competencies required.

Requires the ability to work effectively in a paired leadership, highly matrixed and relationship‑driven culture.

Requires the ability to synthesize information and lead resolution efforts across complex scenarios.

Visible and collaborative leader with excellent listening and communication skills and ability to have crucial conversations.
