Genetic Counselor – Children’s Hospital Position Summary

At Stony Brook University Hospital, our Children’s Hospital Genetic Counselors focus on pediatric diagnoses and provide collaborative support for the Stony Brook Cancer Center and prenatal services as part of the clinical and medical geneticist team. This position is integral to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and offers the opportunity to excel in multidisciplinary teams focused on excellence in patient diagnosis, care coordination, and patient-centered communication. Duties of a Genetic Counselor

Provide all aspects of prenatal genetic counseling, including arranging for testing and communicating with care providers. Assess personal and family histories associated with hereditary cancer syndromes and arrange for testing. Document clinic sessions with notes written in a timely fashion. Order genetic laboratory tests, maintain contact with labs and patients, and obtain consents. Collaborate with genetic counseling team members to provide cross‑coverage of oncology, pediatric, and prenatal services as needed. Discuss benefits and limitations of genetic testing options. Assist families in understanding genetic disorders, probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, and recurrence risks. Develop and present education and related information with the team as appropriate. Participate in research protocols and collaborative patient care initiatives as directed. Perform administrative tasks related to counseling services and committees or special projects in which participation is expected. Provide teaching and supervision to students or other health care professionals as appropriate. Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling. Board eligible or certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics/American Board of Genetic Counseling, with achievement of certification within one year of employment if initially board eligible. Excellent communication skills, compassion for patients, and a collaborative work ethic. Preferred Qualifications

Fluent in both English and Spanish. Demonstrated experience counseling in pediatrics, prenatal, and/or oncology. Proven ability in both team‑based and autonomous environments. Posting Overview

Successfully complete pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services. Complete electronic reference checks with a minimum of three professional references. Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen. Meet regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings. Salary range: $78,030 – $88,174 Base. Additional compensation may include annual supplemental pay such as location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full‑time positions ($4,000). The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience.
