Martin/Martin, Inc. is looking for a mid-level structural engineer to join our Investigative Engineering Group in our San Mateo, CA office. Typical projects include engineering support for building renovations/repairs, concrete repair, fall protection systems, façade access systems, building envelope systems, concrete repair, expert witness work, and non‑destructive testing.
This position will focus on providing engineering services for renovation, restoration, retrofit, and repair projects for existing structures. Work will include meeting with clients, developing reports, and producing engineering deliverables as defined by the particular project needs. Strong knowledge of building codes, construction standards and the ability to formulate appropriate conclusions to the conditions encountered during investigation are required skills.
The successful candidate will be required to manage and oversee field investigations, recommend testing programs, develop reports and repair documents, and perform construction administration services. Projects will necessitate a balance between in‑office design time and on‑site evaluation time. Our project locations will include throughout the region and can sometimes take us nationally, offering some opportunity to travel. The position will require interactions with clients, including building owners and contractors, along with opportunities for marketing activities.

A typical work week can include drawing development, project coordination, engineering calculations, Construction Administration tasks, site investigations, and participation at industry events. This position allows for interactions with owners, architects, and contractors as you build relationships throughout the project life cycle.
Examples Of Responsibilities
Coordinate and perform investigations with in‑house staff and clients
Engage with clients and contractors as primary point of contact throughout the project life cycle
Manage and collaborate with engineering and technician staff to produce high‑quality project documentation using computer design and graphics software programs
Develop, monitor, and manage project work plans, schedules, and design budgets
Build lasting relationships with clients through project work and business development activities
Develop design recommendations for projects
Assemble construction drawings, write and edit specifications, and follow project specific QA/QC plans
WORKING CONDITIONS/SKILLS/ABILITIES This position is primarily technical in nature and requires working inside and outside the office to complete a wide range of activities. The following abilities are required:
Move inside or outside the office and on non‑ADA accessible construction sites
Remain stationary for long periods of time
Repetitive movement on tasks such as using a keyboard or mouse
Carry, ascend, and descend a ladder
Identify color
Read, communicate, and document in English
Determine and exchange accurate information
Occasionally move or hold equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
Investigative: Positions self in atypical environments and small, confined spaces
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Registered Professional Engineer
Completed 4 years progressive engineering experience
Exhibits effective communication and technical skills
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Completed 6‑8 years progressive engineering experienceFollowed multiple engineering projects from start of design to completion of construction
Demonstrates a strong desire for continued professional development
Participating member of professional and/or technical societies
