Working as part of the firm’s dedicated Pro Bono and Social Impact team—directly reporting to the Director of Pro Bono & Social Impact and the Pro Bono Partner—you will assist in the overall management and development of the firm’s pro bono and social impact programs. The position is based in either Boston or Chicago and will work closely with stakeholders to manage existing initiatives, launch new ones, and provide guidance to volunteer attorneys and partner supervisors.
Programs include immigration, civil rights, veterans, nonprofit corporate support, wills & estates, expungement, and impact litigation, plus an annual firmwide Week of Service. Projected starting date is February 2026; a hybrid work schedule is available. Cover letter requested.
Reporting Relationships Director of Pro Bono & Social Impact
Location Boston, MA Chicago, IL
Responsibilities Pro Bono and Social Impact Engagement and Staffing
Promote engagement and participation in the firm’s pro bono and social impact program
Interact purposefully with all firm attorneys, especially in Boston and Chicago, to integrate them into pro bono opportunities
Develop and maintain strong relationships with legal service providers and partner nonprofit organizations; explore new collaborations
Arrange training opportunities for firm attorneys and provide supporting materials
Manage the collection and distribution of pro bono opportunities from providers and other sources
Identify and evaluate pro bono matters for eligibility and appropriateness
Track progress and outcomes; support transition of pro bono matters of departing attorneys
Develop and manage pro bono collaborations with corporate clients
Assist with planning for annual NP Impact Week of Service event
Represent the firm at access‑to‑justice initiatives developed by or in partnership with the legal services community
Program Management Functions
Develop and maintain department resources: policies, procedures, training materials, templates
Submit conflicts checks, send case opening emails, and provide billing information and internal procedures
Assist with responses to auditors, legal services organizations, and nonprofit clients regarding hours and expenses
Apply risk‑management understanding for intake, staffing, supervision, tracking, and closing pro bono matters
Maintain pro bono databases and tracking systems with up-to-date information
Assist with monitoring pro bono and social‑impact expenses and budgeting
Support the Firmwide Pro Bono Committee: schedule meetings, draft agendas, and follow up on requests
Perform other duties as assigned
Communications and Marketing
Work with Communications and Marketing teams to promote the firm’s pro bono and social impact efforts on internal and external channels
Assist with presentations for firmwide events, including pro bono celebration lunches and training sessions
Assist with regular internal reporting of pro bono metrics to Firm Leadership and external annual survey reporting
Assist with drafting pro bono award nominations or other submissions
Provide content for Marketing, Business Development, and Recruiting materials
Substantive Law Functions
Advise on substantive legal issues and consult on case strategy in appropriate cases
Mentor junior attorneys in case management, drafting, client relationship, and litigation skills
Qualifications
J.D. degree with relevant legal practice experience
Demonstrated commitment to public‑interest law
5‑7 years of legal experience; preference for understanding private law firm practice and public‑interest legal services sector
Experience in pro bono management and/or program management preferred
Highly organized, detail‑oriented, flexible, and adaptable; excellent proofreading and communication skills
Can‑do attitude; ability to meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment
Organized and self‑directed approach to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Exceptional client service and interpersonal skills across all levels of the firm and partners
Strong judgment and discretion regarding confidential information
Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team
Strong data and technology skills; willingness to learn new software programs
Spanish language fluency preferred but not required
