Deputy Sheriff - Lateral - Civil Service position with Snohomish County, WA. The primary duties support the County’s Sheriff’s Office law enforcement functions, including protecting life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, and investigating crimes throughout Snohomish County. Base pay

$101,417.28/yr - $109,139.16/yr Job Duties

Depending upon assignment, the Deputy may perform a combination of duties representative of the level of work for this class: Patrol unincorporated Snohomish County to deter and discover crimes; conduct crime scene investigations; enforce laws and ordinances; render public assistance as needed. Respond to reported crime scenes; secure the scene; interview victims and witnesses; gather and preserve evidence; arrest suspects; prepare required reports. Investigate and report accidents; administer emergency first aid until aid car arrives. Issue notices of infraction and citations to violators of state laws and county ordinances; serve warrants of arrest. Interview and investigate citizen complaints; respond to inquiries; provide information on laws and ordinances; assist in resolving problems; make referrals to appropriate agencies as necessary. Guard prisoners at hospitals and/or in court; transport prisoners to and from jail and court. Prepare required reports and maintain necessary records. Testify as a credible witness in court as required. Statement of Other Duties

May perform duties in specialty units in accordance with unit policies and depending on experience. May supervise activities of volunteer personnel. May perform the duties of Sergeant. Minimum Qualifications

Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate. An Associate of Arts degree or 90 college credits including courses in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a closely related field is preferred. Must be a United States citizen, a lawful permanent resident, or a DACA recipient as per RCW 41.14.100. Candidates must be at least 20 years old at time of application, with no maximum age. Must pass job-related tests. Special Requirements

A valid Washington State Driver’s License, unrestricted except as to vision, is required prior to appointment. Must pass a Civil Service examination and pre-employment examinations including a complete background investigation, fingerprinting, criminal record check, polygraph examination, medical examination, and a psychological evaluation. Employees must be armed at all times while on duty and must carry official office identification when armed. Must qualify with a firearm on a regular basis. Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: basic law enforcement practices and procedures; English grammar, word usage, spelling and punctuation; basic computer knowledge; defensive driving. Ability to: use discretion and maintain confidentiality of information; keyboard with minimum 20 net words per minute; interpret laws, rules and regulations; communicate effectively with people of all backgrounds; maintain accurate records; perform strenuous physical tasks; work independently in stressful situations; follow oral and written instructions; solve problems; handle situations assertively; use and care of firearms and law enforcement equipment; operate a motor vehicle at high speeds and read maps; use standardized radio codes; establish and maintain effective working relationships with office personnel, other agencies, and the public. Working Conditions

Positions typically require daily interaction with distraught or difficult individuals; standing for prolonged periods; outdoor work in inclement weather; driving on public roads across the county; exposure to hazardous materials, diseases, and airborne/blood-borne pathogens; wearing protective gear; strenuous physical tasks; lifting and carrying objects over 20 pounds.
