Overview This is a limited position. The appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on departmental needs.
DESCRIPTION Under the close supervision and guidance of the Principal Investigator, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and lab manager, the Staff Research Associate will perform standard repetitive research procedures to generate, analyze and validate single‑cell sequencing data from zebrafish infected with microbial pathogens (bacteria and viruses). Projects involve examining inflammation and the responses of the immune system and nervous system to infection. Tasks include isolating cells/nuclei from zebrafish, extracting RNA, barcoding transcripts and submitting them for sequencing. The incumbent will analyze sequencing data, identify regulated transcripts, and mutate genes using CRISPR. The incumbent will assess infected larvae using microscopy (confocal and immunofluorescence), maintain strains of mutant and transgenic zebrafish, maintain and generate microbial mutants, manipulate zebrafish gene function, and genotype zebrafish and microbes. The incumbent will participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed (when appropriate) and perform other SRA 1‑related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Theoretical and practical knowledge of aquaculture/fisheries, genetics, and/or developmental biology acquired through a BA or BS in biology, aquaculture/fisheries, or a related field, or via an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Experience and ability to analyze RNA‑seq data for differential expression.
Experience with standard recombinant DNA research techniques and laboratory procedures such as genome editing, DNA cloning, and immunostaining.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Demonstrated ability to organize, set priorities, meet deadlines, and efficiently carry out multiple and varied tasks during each workday.
Ability to facilitate the maintenance of lab supplies and equipment, keeping organized records.
Experience with microscopy, preferably confocal imaging.
Experience with zebrafish aquaculture.
Demonstrated experience in microbiology, with some experience in bacterial genetics.
Familiarity with Apple and PC computers and ability to work independently with applications such as word processing, database, spreadsheet, and graphics software.
Ability to keep accurate records of experimental procedures and results, and to prepare oral and written presentations.
Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication, and the Injury and Illness Prevention Program; familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan.
Knowledge and ability to order lab supplies and equipment.
Willingness to uphold principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
Ability to inject zebrafish embryos at the 1‑cell stage with reliable results.
Practical competency in handling, breeding, and rearing zebrafish.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Willing and able to safely work with and in proximity to BSL2 bacteria and viruses; has appropriate physical strength for handling aquaculture equipment.
Appropriate dexterity for manipulating zebrafish embryos.
Willing to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, as required for experiments.
Job offer contingent upon satisfactory background check clearance.
Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $58,151 – $69,363 (prorated if
Hourly Equivalent: $27.85 – $33.22.
