Save Job

Senior Chassis Steering Systems Engineer Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc (HATCI) is seeking a Senior Chassis Engineer with 8–10 years of hands‑on automotive design experience to lead the development of power steering systems for U.S. pickup trucks and off‑road vehicles. The role involves end‑to‑end design, analysis, and validation of both hydraulic and electronic power steering subsystems in a dynamic OEM/Tier‑1 environment using CATIA V5. The engineer will apply deep knowledge of chassis integration, vehicle dynamics, and safety standards to ensure steering systems meet performance, durability, and regulatory requirements such as FMVSS and SAE for on‑and off‑road applications.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Steering System Development:

Lead the concept, architecture, and detailed design of hydraulic and electric power steering systems, including pumps, valves, racks, columns, motors, and actuators.

3D CAD Modeling:

Create and refine complex 3D models and assemblies in CATIA V5, developing full steering‑system package layouts, mounting brackets, and interfaces with chassis and suspension components.

System Requirements and Analysis:

Define steering system requirements (steering effort, feedback, kinematics, durability, NVH, etc.) and perform engineering analysis using CAE/FEA tools to validate structural stiffness, fatigue life, and thermal performance.

Prototyping and Testing:

Plan and execute prototype development and testing, developing test plans for component and system validation (bench tests, road tests, durability rigs). Analyze test data to verify performance, calibrate variable‑assist features, and identify issues.

Regulatory Compliance:

Ensure all designs comply with FMVSS and SAE regulations, covering steering‑column collapse, steering wheel lash, electronic stability control inputs, and integration with braking and safety systems.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration:

Work closely with electrical engineers, vehicle dynamics experts, suspension and brake teams, manufacturing, and quality assurance to integrate the steering system into the overall vehicle.

Supplier Coordination:

Interface with Tier‑1 suppliers, issue technical packages, review designs, and drive supplier testing and validation to meet specifications.

Documentation:

Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, including design specifications, component drawings, BOM, DFMEA/FMEA, DFSS documentation, and validation test reports.

Technical Leadership:

Mentor and guide junior engineers, providing technical guidance in design practices, CAD standards, and problem‑solving approaches.

Continuous Improvement:

Stay current with advances in steering technology and automotive engineering practices, proposing and implementing design improvements for weight reduction, cost efficiency, and performance enhancement.

Travel:

Occasional domestic and international travel (~20%) to Korean HQ, supplier facilities, chassis component manufacturers, and CA test tracks, as needed.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE

Education:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.

Experience:

8–10 years of professional experience in chassis and suspension design, focused on power steering systems for pickup trucks, SUVs, or off‑road vehicles.

Experience with electric or hybrid vehicle steering systems.

Advanced steering technologies such as variable‑assist steering mechanisms and steering dampers.

Advanced analysis skills in CAE tools (ANSYS, Nastran, MATLAB/Simulink) for suspension modeling or dynamic simulations.

In‑depth vehicle dynamics knowledge of heavy‑duty trucks and SUVs, including off‑road performance and NVH.

Familiarity with CATIA V6, ENOVIA V6, or Windchill PLM systems.

Certifications:

Professional Engineer license or Six Sigma certification, if applicable.

Proactive, technically rigorous mindset with leadership potential.
