Toole Design Group in Providence, RI is seeking an experienced and talented full‑time Principal Civil Engineer. This role focuses on final roadway design and corridor modeling, and is affiliated with our Boston, MA team.

A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer As Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure across diverse settings—from densely urban roadways to suburban trails. You will manage projects through design development, design review, bid package creation, permitting, and on‑site construction support. You will oversee production work in AutoCAD, supervise junior staff, and ensure the highest quality of our projects.
You will collaborate directly with clients and interdisciplinary colleagues, contribute to quality initiatives, support business development, and deliver innovative solutions to complex projects.
Salary Range We are targeting a salary range of $175,000–$200,000 for this position.
Qualifications of a Principal Civil Engineer
A Professional Engineering license in MA (other Northeast states a plus)
A bachelor's or master’s degree in civil engineering or a related field
At least 15 years of relevant engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications
At least 5 years in a project manager or design lead role, especially with MA or Northeast clients, and a proven track record of delivering large/complex projects on time and on budget
Broad knowledge in civil engineering, with experience in roadway design, drainage, geometric design, 3D modeling, and accessible public spaces
Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation and design software such as Civil 3D, GEOPAK, or InRoads
Experience with stormwater infrastructure and software like HydroCAD or HydroFlow
Experience developing construction documents and providing construction management services
Experience preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
General experience leading multidisciplinary teams, coordinating utilities and right‑of‑way impacts, street lighting, traffic signal, and landscape/hardscape layout
Interest in multimodal and active transportation design
