Toole Design Group – Principal Civil Engineer (Boston) Toole Design Group in Boston, MA is looking to hire an experienced and talented full‑time Principal Civil Engineer. The engineering position focuses on final design, construction plan development and corridor modeling, and earns a competitive salary with a possible annual bonus and great benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, retirement, a health savings account (HSA), and a flexible spending account (FSA). A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer As a Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in various contexts, from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that enhance the natural environment. You will use AutoCAD to fulfill production work as needed and supervise others. You will manage projects and guide your team through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and construction support. You will work with your team to ensure the projects meet the highest quality standards, and you will play a key role in implementing the firm’s quality initiatives, supporting business development and project pursuits.

We are targeting a salary range of $175,000–$200,000 for this position.

Qualifications of a Principal Civil Engineer

A Professional Engineering license in MA (other Northeast states a plus)

A bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering, or a relevant field

At least 15 years of relevant engineering experience

It would be a plus if you had some of the following:

At least 5 years serving in a project manager or design lead role, preferably for MA or other Northeast-based clients, with a proven track record of delivering multiple large/complex projects on time and on budget

A broad knowledge base in civil engineering, with specific experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3‑D modeling and design of accessible public spaces

Proficiency in computer‑automated design (AutoCAD or MicroStation) and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads)

Experience analyzing and designing stormwater infrastructure, including the use of stormwater design software such as HydroCAD or HydroFlow

Experience developing construction documents and providing construction management services

Experience preparing transportation and local agency permit documents

General experience leading multidisciplinary teams, coordinating utility and right‑of‑way impacts, street lighting, traffic signal, and landscape/hardscape layout

Interest in multimodal and active transportation design

You’ll be great here if:

You have strong leadership skills and enjoy mentoring junior staff

Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer This full‑time position typically works a hybrid schedule of 40 hours a week, with at least two to three days a week in the office. We also provide employees the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home up to two days per week. Applicants should be willing to travel within New England to support public engagement activities.
