AVP, Underwriting Director – Core Contract Surety
Zurich Insurance is seeking an
AVP, Underwriting Director – Core Contract Surety
(or Executive Underwriter) to join our Surety Underwriting Team in Boston, MA (other locations may be considered). Position requires about 20% travel.
Overview As a member of Zurich's Surety Underwriting Team, you will fully apply and hone your underwriting and marketing skills. You will underwrite and analyze new and renewal Surety business using The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority. You will deliver high‑level service to external clients, build relationships and promote the company.
Responsibilities
Production and underwriting of new and renewal Surety business.
Handling a large book of prominent accounts.
Internal marketing and production within Zurich North America to support cross‑sell efforts.
Execution of the external marketing strategy.
Adherence to underwriting rules, guidelines, insurance laws, regulations and the Zurich Way.
Establish new and develop existing agency & broker relationships.
Work within limits and authorities on assignments of varying complexity.
Qualifications Executive Underwriter
High School Diploma or equivalent; 5+ years in Underwriting or Market‑Facing/Finance/Accounting/Banking OR
High School Diploma; 10+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support OR
Zurich Certified Apprentice program with associate degree; 3+ years in Underwriting or Market‑Facing/Finance/Accounting/Banking OR
Zurich Certified Apprentice; associate degree; 8+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support (AND)
Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Experience with time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Experience working in a team environment.

High School Diploma; 14+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support OR

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice; associate degree; 12+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support (AND)
Experience with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree.
In‑depth knowledge of Surety lines and legal/regulatory guidelines.
Ability to assess risk effectively.
Strong negotiation skills and broker relationships.
Excellent oral and written communication.
Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations.
Compensation Combined salary range:
$98,500.00 – $215,000.00 . AVP:
$130,000.00 – $215,000.00 , short‑term incentive bonus eligibility 20%; Executive Underwriter:
$98,500.00 – $165,000.00 , short‑term incentive bonus eligibility 15%.
Location & Work Arrangement
Boston, MA (other locations may be considered).
Hybrid remote working.
Full time.
