About the Position
A Registered Nurse (RN) in Obstetrics provides specialized care to women during pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and the postpartum period. This role involves monitoring maternal and fetal health, assisting with labor and delivery, managing complications, and providing patient education and support.
Key Responsibilities
Prenatal Care and Assessment:
Perform comprehensive assessments of pregnant patients, including medical history, vital signs, and fetal development.
Monitor physical and emotional well‐being of pregnant patients for complications.
Provide education on prenatal care, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle.
Administer prescribed medications and treatments.
Labor and Delivery Care:
Monitor progress of labor, assess contractions, fetal heart rate, maternal vital signs.
Administer pain management options in collaboration with team.
Assist in delivery, maintaining sterile environment, and supporting provider.
Assist with procedures related to delivery, such as episiotomy and emergency interventions.
Fetal Monitoring and Assessment:
Continuously monitor fetal heart rate and contractions using electronic fetal monitoring.
Assess fetal well‐being, report abnormal findings.
Perform routine assessments and intervene in complications.
Postpartum Care:
Provide immediate postpartum care for mothers and newborns.
Assess and manage potential postpartum complications.
Assist with breastfeeding education and support.
Offer emotional and psychological support.
Patient Education and Counseling:
Educate patients and families about pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care.
Provide information on birth control options.
Teach importance of follow‑up care and warning signs.
Collaboration with the Healthcare Team:
Work with obstetricians, midwives, pediatricians, and other team members.
Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and care planning.
Communicate effectively about any changes in patient status.
Infection Control and Safety:
Follow strict infection control procedures.
Ensure safe administration of medications.
Monitor for signs of complications and intervene appropriately.
Documentation and Record‑Keeping:
Maintain accurate documentation of patient assessments, labor progress, medications, complications, and education.
Update electronic health records and ensure compliance.
Document birth details, postpartum recovery, and any complications.
