Tax Manager or Director (State & Local Tax)

The Tax Manager or Director will lead and manage multiple tax engagements to deliver state tax services for our diverse client base. The role involves consulting and representing on state business income, personal income, sales and use, payroll and other state taxes. Responsibilities include reviewing or drafting memoranda, creating spreadsheets, addressing tax credits including research credit, handling audits and voluntary disclosure agreements, and preparing and reviewing sales and other tax returns on a limited basis.

Essential Duties
- Build new and existing client relationships and demonstrate basic knowledge of client businesses.
- Work closely with Tax Partners to satisfy planning and compliance needs.
- Understand and manage firm risk on tax services performed.
- Research, write and consult on various tax engagements.
- Respond to inquiries from state tax authorities.
- Prepare sales tax and other tax returns.
- Train and supervise staff, reviewing and evaluating their work.
- Manage multiple clients, budgets and production goals.
Qualifications
- BA/BS/MS degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university required; MST preferred.
- CPA, EA, JD or other related certification required.
- 7+ years progressive tax experience in public accounting required; minimum 6 years SALT experience.
- Strong accounting and analytical skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
- Experience supervising and training teams, providing feedback.
- Understanding of risks associated with technical tax positions and ability to communicate them to partners.
- Ability to meet challenging client requirements, provide services and possess strong communication, interpersonal, analytical and research capabilities.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound decisions in client‑related matters pertaining to tax returns.
- Ability to work additional hours as needed to meet client deliverables.
Compensation & Benefits
The compensation for this position will vary by location, ranging from $100,000 to $150,000, dependent on office location, role specifics and individual qualifications, experience, skills and certifications.
