Job Description
The Substation Engineer performs engineering work focused on substation design, including physical and protection & control practices. Responsibilities include design, construction, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical substations; planning and implementing projects related to substation infrastructure; ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Primary Duties
- Develop detailed engineering designs for new substations or modifications to existing ones.
- Create layout drawings, schematics, and specifications for substation equipment.
- Conduct project design and cost alternative studies, perform field inspections, and prepare associated reports.
- Manage and oversee substation construction projects from conception to completion.
- Coordinate with cross‑functional teams, including electrical designers, technicians, and project managers.
- Prepare plans, layouts, and design calculations in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Specify and select appropriate substation equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, relays, and switchgear.
- Ensure equipment meets industry standards and project requirements.
- Stay current with industry codes, standards, and regulations related to substations.
- Plan and conduct testing and commissioning activities for substation equipment.
- Identify and resolve issues during the commissioning process.
- Develop maintenance procedures and schedules for substation equipment.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with substation components, recommending and implementing solutions.
- Implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures in design, construction, and maintenance.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date documentation related to substation designs, projects, and maintenance activities.
- Prepare and manage cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications, and construction contracts.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency in substation design and maintenance.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Relevant experience in substation design, construction, and maintenance.
- Experience designing additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades, and rearrangements of generation, transmission, substation, and communication & control systems.
- Proficiency with engineering software and tools.
- Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices.
- Knowledge of substation systems from 34.5 kV to 500 kV with familiarity of high‑voltage substation design principles.
- Application of the National Electrical Safety Code to design processes.

Salary Range
USD 90,000 – 135,000 per year.
