Senior Automation and Controls Engineer – CDM Smith CDM Smith is seeking an experienced Automation and Controls Engineer to design and implement SCADA systems, controls, and instrumentation in process industries.

The successful candidate will lead projects, mentor junior staff, and deliver solutions to clients.

Responsibilities

Create basic to highly complex SCADA, controls, networks, cyber security, instrumentation, and related system designs.

Develop technical memoranda and preliminary design reports (PDRs) establishing design goals and criteria.

Contribute to master plans and need assessment reports for SCADA systems and cyber security.

Lead teams of junior staff, provide direction and mentoring, and review their work.

Develop proposals, client presentations, and scope of work documents; prepare project budgets and LOE estimates.

Support construction services, review component-level shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and perform FATs and field inspections.

Program SCADA system integration deliverables; design HMI interfaces; configure and program PLCs; develop automated operational reports.

Lead testing and startup teams for SCADA, controls, instrumentation, and related systems with minimal supervision; ensure documentation quality.

Write operations & maintenance manuals, develop end‑user training programs, and create training plans for all client organizational levels.

Identify opportunities to expand contract business with existing clients.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology or related discipline.

Professional Engineering (PE) license.

Minimum 10 years of related experience.

Equivalent experience considered in lieu of degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Water/Wastewater systems.

Experience within an engineering and/or construction firm.

Experience leading teams.

Travel Requirements Domestic and/or international travel may be required. Travel frequency depends on project needs.

Driver’s License Requirements An appropriate and valid driver’s license is required.

Skills and Abilities

Expert knowledge of instrumentation, controls, and related system designs.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.

Expert knowledge of 3D and 4D CAD drafting.
