Assistant Director Nursing (RN) Medical Surgical The Assistant Director of Nursing is a member of the MedStar Health Division of Nursing and leadership team. The role supports and collaborates with the Director of Nursing in providing leadership, oversight, and coordination for the assigned unit/department. Responsibilities include directing nursing and patient care delivery of the unit-based professional and support personnel, ensuring holistic culturally competent, person-centered, evidence-based care, and collaboratively managing patient transitions across the continuum of care. The Assistant Director assumes administrative and leadership authority 24 hours a day, seven days a week, fostering commitment to quality, safety, and cost-conscious care outcomes.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Develop unit/department goals, objectives, policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.

Build effective relationships across disciplines and departments to ensure efficient, quality patient care and smooth patient throughput.

Set performance standards for associates, evaluate performance, and conduct performance management planning, including personnel recommendations and accountability measures.

Complete annual performance reviews of unit/department associates, providing feedback and championing professional growth.

Maintain communication with the Senior Director of Nursing and other stakeholders in the absence of the Director of Nursing.

Manage unit/department budget and support organizational objectives, ensuring material, supply, and equipment availability.

Optimize patient care delivery and outcomes, utilize interdisciplinary care models, and conduct patient rounds for engagement and satisfaction.

Lead unit-based safety huddles, address care delivery concerns, and ensure compliance with National Patient Safety Goals and quality metrics.

Participate in hiring, evaluation, promotion, and termination of personnel within the unit/department.

Collaborate with other nurse leaders to ensure staff competencies and provide development resources.

Assist with orientation, preceptor, and charge/resource nurse programs for new hires.

Maintain continuing education records, competency assessments, licensure, and specialty certifications for the unit.

Provide shift-based clinical leadership through delegation, accountability, and improvement of the practice environment.

Participate in hospital committees, task forces, and projects, contributing to Magnet Recognition and community outreach.

Stay current with nursing trends through literature, seminars, conferences, and professional associations.

Assume administrative responsibilities in the absence of the Director of Nursing and provide coverage for colleagues.

Maintain clinical knowledge and engage in direct patient care as required.

Minimal Qualifications Education

Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a nationally accredited program (required).

Master's degree in Nursing or a health-related field from a nationally accredited program (preferred).

Experience

3-4 years progressive nursing care experience (required).

Leadership and management experience (preferred).

Licenses and Certifications

Registered Nurse (RN) with State or Compact Licensure in the District of Columbia (required).

Specialty certification preferred.

CPR (BLS/NRP) from AHA or American Red Cross within 90 days (required).

Additional certifications may vary by department.

EFM certification required for Perinatal nurses within specified time frames.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent problem-solving skills and independent judgment.

Strong verbal and written communication.

Basic competency with Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.

Salary Range USD $102,606.00 - USD $196,996.00 /Yr.
