The Financial Services Analyst will support an intellectually vibrant community of faculty, students, and staff in the Department of English, and collaborate with the Department\'s Shared Services Region and the Divisional Finance office. The primary focus is to oversee day-to-day financial operations across multiple functional areas, including operations, temporary academic support, the graduate program, gifts and endowment, faculty research funds, and public programming. Working with the Department Manager, the analyst will conduct financial reporting, maintain departmental budgets, audit payroll and payroll expenses, process reimbursements and other payments, and oversee expenditures. They will assist department members with finance-related needs including maintenance of research funds, programmatic budgets, purchases and reimbursements, and other finance support, while maintaining compliance with Division and Campus requirements. Responsibilities

Financial Services: processes and/or approves financial transactions including BearBuy requisitions and vouchers; expense reimbursements; position, funding entry, and salary cost transfer requests in UCPath; bluCard purchases; SIS department award entries; Accounts Receivable invoices. Serve as liaison with SHARE Region and coordinate with HR/Payroll, Purchasing, and RA teams on appointments, contracts, and related inquiries. Address difficult and complex customer inquiries; develop and recommend improvements to streamline financial services operations; document procedures; train staff on new procedures. Provide guidance to faculty and staff on financial processing functions and maintain an effective teamwork environment.

General Ledger And Financial Reporting

Maintain the department’s general ledger and ensure chartstrings are in good standing. Oversee fiscal aspects of the department’s revenue and expenses; run financial reports, analyze data, and resolve discrepancies. Initiate financial journals, allocate funds for programs, transfer expenses as needed, and recharge payments for department space usage. Reconcile entries for monthly and fiscal close; assist with monthly/quarterly financial controls with the Department Manager.

Budget

Administer faculty research funds, the Department Chair’s discretionary budget, and budgets for departmental programs/events and student activities. Coordinate and implement programmatic budget allocations; serve as a financial resource for research funds and program budgets; track expenses and provide regular financial reports. Advise on current funding and spending; analyze reports to identify discrepancies.

Research And Analysis

Provide reports and analyses for budgetary and financial projects, including new procedures; prepare recommendations for reconciliation of spending plans to actuals; review trends to manage expenses within scope; ensure compliance with policies.

Compliance

Apply internal and external policies to ensure financial processes comply with federal, state, and institutional requirements; strengthen internal controls and streamline procedures; serve as subject matter expert for department staff and students. Attend trainings and participate in groups to stay up-to-date on policies and mentor finance colleagues; provide guidance to less experienced team members on financial processing functions.

Required Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of financial processes, policies, and procedures. Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, desktop/web applications, spreadsheets, and databases. Strong interpersonal, analytical, service, communication, and organizational skills; sound judgment and problem-solving abilities; ability to work well in a team and handle multiple priorities. Ability to present information clearly in writing and verbally; respond quickly to inquiries from faculty, staff, and others; convey complex information with tact. Ability to independently gather, organize, and perform financial analyses; maintain confidentiality; understanding of internal controls. Leadership potential to guide and mentor staff; Bachelor\'s degree in a related area or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of financial data management and reporting systems; familiarity with UC Berkeley systems (BearBuy, BFS, CalAnswers, SIS, UCPath) or the ability to learn them quickly.

For information on UC Berkeley\'s comprehensive benefits package, see the Compensation & Benefits website. The posted salary range is 80,000.00 - 103,800.00 annually. This is a full-time, exempt, career position eligible for UC Benefits.
