Description

The Department of Digital Arts at Pratt Institute invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Game Arts at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning in Fall 2026. The successful candidate will be an experienced educator in game design and a practicing artist. We seek applicants who have successfully demonstrated the ability to employ digital technologies in the field of games and play. A practice that reflects the relevance of game studies or the games industry to contemporary art is preferred.

The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of game design and programming in common game engines. Professional, artistic, or scholarly focus may include a broad set of interests and applications, including but not limited to: experimental games, independent games, open source software development, technical art, storytelling and narrative development, VFX approaches (motion capture, etc.), audio/music and games, virtual production, and collaborations with industry. Experience in the development and application of novel/experimental approaches to game arts—and where the field converges with other artistic approaches, social practice, and technological advances—is strongly encouraged. The successful candidate's practice will also include work that is informed by issues that are critically relevant to the field and society at large.

Examples of Duties

  • Teach a range of Game Arts courses at the undergraduate level, including advanced programming courses
  • Participate in curriculum revision and development and assessment
  • Contribute to developing a strong culture of digital arts research, practice, and professional development in the department
  • Maintain substantial creative accomplishments in digital arts and games
  • Exhibit and/or showcase work and participate in professional symposia in order to shape conversations in the field, develop strong connections with peers, and bring findings back to the classroom and curricular discussions
  • Advise and mentor students and student organizations
  • Participate in committee work and other service to the department, the School of Art, and the Institute
  • Work with the department chair to establish community partnerships

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a commitment to inclusion, pedagogical innovation, student-centered teaching, career paths for students, and a passion for contributing to the community on campus and beyond through service and interdisciplinary collaboration. A strong record of achievement that includes professional practice, research, scholarship and creative activity is required and should be demonstrated through a portfolio and record of production, exhibitions, presentations, publications, grants, awards, and partnerships.

Education:
An MFA or a terminal degree in Game Design, Digital Arts Practice, or any related area

Experience:

  • Three or more years of teaching experience at the college level
  • A record of professional accomplishment as demonstrated through a portfolio detailing teaching and practice, which might include: projects, productions, grants, awards, publications, presentations, and partnerships
  • Strong understanding of historical and contemporary issues as they relate to art and design
  • Demonstrated alignment of your research, scholarship, and work with the values of Pratt and the ability to communicate well with diverse populations
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills

The Department of Digital Arts has a 35-year history in the artistic application of innovative technologies. It is consistently ranked as one of the top ten animation schools in the country and one of the top three on the East Coast. The department offers BFA degrees in 2D Animation, 3D Animation, Art & Technology, and Game Arts, and MFA degrees in Interactive Arts and 3D Animation.
