Description
The Fine Arts Department at Pratt Institute invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Painting at the rank of Assistant Professor , beginning in Fall 2026 . We seek a practicing artist with an active and recognized professional practice in Painting—someone whose exhibitions, projects, and critical engagement reflect a deep commitment to the field and its evolving conversations.
The successful candidate will bring a record of teaching excellence and a demonstrated ability to inspire students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our undergraduate program offers areas of emphasis in Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, and Integrated Practices, Printmaking, and Jewelry . Our MFA Fine Arts program includes emphases in Painting/Drawing, Sculpture, Integrated Practices, and Printmaking . The ideal candidate will be able to teach broadly across Painting and, where possible, connect their expertise to other Fine Arts areas.
Faculty in Fine Arts contribute not only through teaching but also through active participation in departmental, school, and institute-wide initiatives. At some point in their appointment, the successful candidate will serve as an area coordinator, collaborating with colleagues to shape curricular vision, support faculty, and ensure student success. We especially value candidates whose creative practice and pedagogical approach demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in higher education, and who are eager to participate fully in the intellectual, cultural, and community life of Pratt.
Responsibilities
- Teach a range of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels
- Future service as department Area Coordinator
- Participate in curriculum revision and development, as well as department programming, events, and forums
- Participate in committee work and other services to the department and the Institute
- Advise and mentor students
- Maintain substantial creative accomplishments and participation in the field, including scholarship/research/publications, and conferences
- Perform all other related activities as required
Qualifications
- Candidates should have a terminal degree, MFA, or equivalent
- Two or more years of teaching experience at the college level
- A record of professional accomplishment, as demonstrated through a portfolio detailing teaching and practice, projects, grants, awards, publications, and an active exhibition record
- Strong understanding of historical and contemporary issues
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse populations
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
