AVTEC Instructor/Department Head: Maritime
Position located in Seward, Alaska. This role serves as an instructional subject matter expert and the leader of the Alaska Maritime Training Center (AMTC), overseeing planning, development, and delivery of training programs and the use of assessment and training technologies such as the fire trainer and full‑mission bridge simulator.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement training curricula and instructional resources.
Provide direct supervision of six full‑time instructors and several adjunct instructors.
Lead the maritime advisory board and manage grant initiatives and special projects.
Serve on the AVTEC leadership team.
Optimize use of training technologies and manage department budget and staffing.
Maintain relationships with maritime industry stakeholders, including the U.S. Coast Guard, harbor and port authorities, and training institutions.
Manage contract training arrangements and coordinate classroom, conference room, and simulator use.
Recruit, evaluate, coach, and retain faculty and staff.
Execute outreach to primary, secondary, and post‑secondary educational institutions to expand AVTEC’s presence.
Qualifications
Four years of journey‑level trade experience in the applicable field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience as detailed below.
Four years of experience in adult training or vocational education, or any of the following qualification packages:
• Bachelor’s degree in the applicable field, two years of journey‑level experience, and two years of adult training experience.
• Industry‑recognized professional certification, two years of journey‑level experience, and two years of adult training experience.
Knowledge of teaching, training, research, presentation, testing, and other instructional methods.
Leadership ability to influence, motivate, and adapt to various situations.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Human resources management experience, including performance evaluation and feedback.
Special Requirements
Completion of a U.S. Coast Guard approved Train the Trainer course.
Management of department budget and staffing, with monthly expenditure monitoring.
Experience working with diverse industry stakeholders.
Experience coordinating contract training and managing facilities and equipment.
Recruitment and coaching of faculty and staff.
Maintenance of a maritime advisory committee with at least two external members.
Preferred: Experience developing, drafting, editing, or updating U.S. Coast Guard training courses.
Salary Starting salary depends on qualifications, experience, state policy, location, and collective bargaining agreements.
