Chief Risk Officer
to join the executive leadership team in Portland, Maine. About the Role The Chief Risk Officer reports directly to the CEO and provides executive oversight of the bank’s enterprise risk strategy. The CRO will guide the organization in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks that influence financial performance, regulatory readiness, and operational resilience. As a key member of senior leadership, the CRO will contribute to strategic planning and help ensure a strong enterprise risk management program.
Key Responsibilities
Design, implement, and continuously enhance a comprehensive Enterprise Risk Management Program that supports the bank’s strategic objectives
Identify, evaluate, and monitor risk across all major categories including interest rate, data security, operational, compliance, reputational, and emerging risks
Develop and manage the bank’s risk appetite and risk tolerance framework while ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations and organizational goals
Deliver timely and insightful risk reports, dashboards, and analyses to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Risk Management Committees
Partner with internal departments to cultivate a culture of strong risk awareness and effective controls throughout daily operations
Lead crisis management planning and business continuity strategies
Stay current with regulatory developments and industry trends and guide the bank in adapting risk strategies proactively
Develop, refine, and implement enterprise risk management methodologies across administrative, lending, operational, and compliance functions
Review findings from internal and external audits to strengthen risk posture
Oversee the Information Security Officer and support data security, cybersecurity readiness, third‑party management, and technology risk management
Manage the bank’s insurance program
Serve as a primary regulatory liaison with the FDIC and the Maine Bureau of Financial Institutions
Supervise key positions including the Director of Compliance and Audit, AML and CFT Officer, Information Security Officer, Fraud Prevention Officer, Risk Operations Officer, and Payments Risk Officer
Foster a culture of growth, motivation, and development for risk team members
Represent the bank at selected community events that support its mission
Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support the success of the organization
Skills and Qualifications
A minimum of 10 years of senior level experience in risk management within banking, financial services, or a closely related industry
Expertise in enterprise risk frameworks, risk modeling, and governance structures
Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to influence, guide, and partner across all levels of an organization
Excellent analytical thinking, strategic decision making, and communication skills
Master’s degree in finance, risk management, economics, or a related field preferred
Professional certifications such as FRM, PRM, or CFA preferred
