Machine Learning Scientist III
This role is part of the Traveler Business Team, which drives growth for Expedia’s global consumer businesses. The team focuses on strategic vision, operating strategy, and plans, with responsibilities including investment allocation, P&L accountability, and leading cross‑functional teams.
Introduction to team As a Machine Learning Scientist III, you will play a key role in advancing the automation products pipeline. You will independently assess model performance, craft end‑to‑end solutions, and communicate compelling rationales. You will refine and optimize methods and tools for the SEO team to drive continuous improvement.
In This Role, You Will
Write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular with good naming conventions and supports efficient translation into a data pipeline.
Work on advanced GenAI models (LLMs) to drive marketing content optimization.
Apply understanding of supervised and unsupervised machine learning theory.
Tackle business problems using fundamental machine learning models, algorithms, and techniques with standard libraries.
Modify or adapt models and techniques to fit business needs.
Independently conduct proper model performance evaluation.
Build end‑to‑end designs of one‑step models based on detailed business requirements.
Seek relevant academic papers to evaluate current models and recommend sophisticated designs.
Select valid approaches with appropriate effort, favoring iterative delivery that solves objectives.
Communicate compelling rationales and narratives to peers and partners.
Influence action and results through clear written communication.
Frame challenging business problems as data science problems with concrete tasks.
Leverage others’ skills and expertise effectively in problem solving.
Manage stakeholders with frequent communication, expectation management, meeting deadlines, and minimizing surprises.
Manage the backlog across large cross‑functional teams and coordinate project delivery with business timing.
Experience And Qualifications
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a quantitative field such as mathematics, physics, engineering, operations research, data science, or similar.
6+ years of industry experience or equivalent.
Strong proficiency with Python, R, and SQL.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain multiple data science projects/products in production environments.
Extensive experience with advanced statistical techniques for A/B testing, experimental design, observational causal inference, or quasi‑experimental analysis.
Record of executing independent projects and leading complex, multi‑functional projects with dependencies.
Understanding of real‑world large data sets: domain‑specific problem understanding, data preparation, travel‑related data processing, data integration, data structures for ML, data pipelining, data modeling, and AI/ML algorithms.
Working or theoretical knowledge of NLP and Transformers.
Advanced proficiency in GitHub for collaborative development and version control.
Proficiency in cloud computing, specializing in big data applications and MLOps for streamlined model deployment.
Knowledge of ML techniques such as Neural Networks, XGBoost, Bayesian methods, clustering, decision trees, random forests, and NLP.
Passion for solving problems and finding patterns and insights within structured and unstructured data.
Base pay range $137,500.00/yr – $192,500.00/yr (Seattle)
