Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced
Contract Director of Accounting
with a
non-profit accounting background
to provide interim leadership during a critical period. This role will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, ensure compliance with non-profit financial reporting standards, and support leadership with accurate, timely financial information.
The ideal candidate is hands‑on, adaptable, and comfortable stepping into an established environment to quickly stabilize and improve accounting processes.
Base pay range $50.00/hr - $100.00/hr
Key Responsibilities Accounting Operations & Oversight
Lead all core accounting functions including
general ledger, month‑end close, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
Ensure timely and accurate
monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close
Review and approve financial statements and internal reports
Non‑Profit Compliance & Reporting
Ensure compliance with
GAAP for non‑profits , including
fund accounting and net asset classifications
Oversee
grant and donor‑restricted fund accounting
Support preparation of
Form 990
and other regulatory filings (as applicable)
Coordinate with external auditors and manage audit deliverables
Leadership & Team Support
Provide interim leadership to the accounting team; mentor and support staff as needed
Assess current processes and recommend
practical, short‑term improvements
Serve as a trusted partner to finance leadership and cross‑functional stakeholders
Systems & Process Improvement
Review accounting systems and workflows for efficiency and accuracy
Assist with system clean‑up, documentation, or transitions (if applicable)
Ensure internal controls are functioning effectively during the contract period
Qualifications Required
8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including
leadership in a non‑profit organization
Strong knowledge of
non‑profit GAAP, fund accounting, and restricted/unrestricted reporting
Proven experience managing
month‑end close and financial reporting
Experience working with
auditors and regulatory requirements
Ability to be
hands‑on
and operate independently in a contract role
Preferred
CPA or equivalent certification
Experience stepping into
interim or contract leadership roles
Familiarity with common non‑profit accounting systems (e.g., Blackbaud, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, etc.)
