Position Overview
The Department of Classics and Religious Studies at UMass Boston invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor to begin September 1, 2026. Candidates should hold a PhD in Classics and demonstrate a strong interest in spoken ancient Greek or Latin, Second Language Acquisition (SLA), and the application of SLA to ancient language pedagogy. The role includes teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, developing outreach programs, overseeing teaching practica, and contributing to interdisciplinary teaching within the College of Liberal Arts.
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Classics and Religious Studies, focusing on ancient Greek or Latin and SLA.
- Develop and deliver outreach programs to schools and oversee teaching practica.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary teaching in Second Language Acquisition and collaborate with departments such as Latin American and Iberian Studies, Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and Applied Linguistics.
- Support research initiatives in Classical languages, pedagogy, digital humanities, and large‑language‑model applications.
Qualifications
- PhD in Classics or related field and the ability to teach ancient languages.
- Strong research record in Classics, ideally complementary to existing faculty research.
- Experience or substantial interest in Second Language Acquisition and its pedagogical applications.
- Evidence of effective teaching and ability to collaborate across departments.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a demonstrated ability to engage a diverse student body.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with interdisciplinary teaching and cross‑listing courses.
- Familiarity with digital humanities tools and large‑language‑model applications in classical research.

Compensation
Pay range: approximately $80,000–$83,300. The specific salary will be determined based on experience and qualifications. Exceptional candidates may be considered for higher salaries.
