Position Details Job Code: JC-494721 Position #: 932-024-3713-XXX Working Title: CT Heavy Equipment Mechanic Classification: CALTRANS HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC # of Positions: Multiple Telework: In Office Department: Caltrans – Division of Equipment (DOE) Director’s EEO Policy: EEO Policy Classification Specification: PARF# 32-6-195 / JC-494721 Job Summary Within the Division of Equipment (DOE) and under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor and/or a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker, the incumbent will work in a shop and/or field environment. Responsibilities include constructing, inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and servicing various equipment used in the Department’s fleet. The role requires completing records and reports, using computer equipment for various tasks, and may involve instructing or directing helpers, apprentices, or other employees. The candidate must possess a valid Class C driver license, adhere to safety protocols, and use personal protective equipment (PPE). The position may require work outside or travel to assist at field mechanic locations or highway maintenance stations, and may involve work in inclement weather. Key Responsibilities Service and repair heavy equipment for Caltrans fleet. Perform inspections and diagnostics to identify and resolve mechanical issues. Maintain accurate service records and reports. Assist in instruction and direction of helpers or apprentices. Ensure proper use and handling of materials, tools, and facilities in compliance with safety standards. Respond to travel, shift, and staffing changes as needed. Eligibility & Examination Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic exam. Candidates who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who are new to state civil services employment must be on the state examination list. For those who are not currently on the list, please apply for the exam . Special Requirements Valid California Class C driver’s license with full endorsements and expiration date.
