Job Description and Duties Within the Division of Equipment (DOE) under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor or Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker, the incumbent will work in a shop and/or field environment to construct, inspect, diagnose, repair, and service various equipment used in the Department's fleet. The position includes completion of records and reports, use of computer equipment for various tasks, and may involve instructing or directing helpers, apprentices, or other employees. The incumbent must possess a valid Class C driver license and be responsible for safeguarding proper use of materials, tools, equipment, and facilities, while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). Work may involve traveling to field mechanic locations, highway maintenance stations, or assisting in the daily shop operation. Incumbents must be able to work in inclement weather, which may include severe cold or heat, and may be required to work during emergency or declared emergency situations.
Job assignments may involve travel, rotation, shift changes, and additional work hours.
Working Conditions Position located at 120 Rickard St., San Francisco, CA. Work will be performed in a shop and/or field setting, possibly outside, and may involve exposure to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, hazardous materials, and varying temperatures. Work may include travel, shift changes, mandatory overtime, and required operation during emergencies.
Minimum Requirements
Valid California Class C driver’s license.
Eligibility determined by Score on the Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic exam; candidates with current eligibility must be on the state examination list.
Drug screening must be passed prior to employment.
Must have documentation of education, license, or certificate, and provide verification (transcripts, diploma, official records, or equivalency reports).
