Assistant General Counsel – Cyber Counsel
Truist is seeking an experienced attorney to support our Legal Department on matters related to cybersecurity, fraud, and data protection. This role requires strong knowledge of regulatory frameworks such as GLBA, NYDFS, PCI, and FFIEC, and working closely with our cybersecurity, fraud, compliance, and risk teams.
Location and Work Expectations
In‑office expectations apply. The position can be based in one of the following offices: Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, GA; or Richmond, VA.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide support to Truist’s Legal Department and lines of business on legal matters related to cybersecurity, fraud, and data protection, including GLBA, NYDFS, PCI, and FFIEC frameworks.
- Assess legal risk, provide legal advice on routine matters, and resolve legal problems that could pose potential exposure to Truist.
- Negotiate contract terms related to cybersecurity and data protection.
- Assist with cybersecurity and fraud incident response, including advising on legal risk and data breach notification requirements.
- Keep abreast of and analyze legislation, regulations, and case law developments affecting Truist and the financial services industry.
- Serve as an individual contributor and may provide ad‑hoc work direction and leadership to other legal staff on active cases or projects.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA‑accredited law school and licensed to practice law in good standing.
- Minimum 5 years of post‑bar legal experience, including contract negotiation and work related to cybersecurity, fraud, data protection, and/or privacy.
- Strong background in state and federal laws and regulations related to cybersecurity, fraud, and data protection, especially those relevant to the financial services industry (e.g., GLBA, NYDFS, PCI).
- Proven self‑starter, able to work independently and take on responsibility.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize matters, manage time effectively, and handle a dynamic workload with critical deadlines.
- Team‑oriented mentality with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Information Privacy Professional / United States (CIPP/US) or comparable certification.
- Experience in a corporate legal department, especially a financial institution, with a track record of increased responsibility.
- Comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment within a large, complex corporation.
Working Conditions
Sitting, standing, walking, and bending: Occasionally (less than 25% of the time). Lifting: Up to 10 lbs. Visual/Audio/ Speaking: Able to access and interpret client information from the computer and speak with individuals in person and on the phone. Manual Dexterity / Keyboarding: Able to work standard office equipment. Availability: Able to work all scheduled hours, including overtime. Travel: Up to 25%.
