Senior Tax Manager – Equity Residential
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to lead and mentor a tax team, ensuring timely and accurate tax compliance across federal, state, county, and local jurisdictions, including partnership, corporate, and REIT reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the tax team in the preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax workpapers, returns, partner allocations, Schedule K‑1 reporting, and REIT compliance.
Provide strategic and consultative support through research memos, budgets, schedules, and other analyses for the Tax Department, other departments, and external customers.
Execute risk assessment, decision making, and policy development, while training and developing team members.
Collaborate with supervisors on tax planning, process development, and internal documentation.
Ensure accurate and timely filing of partnership and corporation tax returns and related correspondence with outside tax authorities.
Manage and review 1031 exchange calculations, record‑keeping, and tax reporting, tracking estimated taxable gains/losses.
Develop and maintain the due‑date database and compliance timelines for each filing period.
Identify, recommend, and implement process and technology improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
Stay current on changes in tax legislation and communicate impacts to management and staff.
Manage entity life‑cycle items to ensure all filing obligations are captured and maintained to avoid late filings.
Assist planning for future events (acquisitions, dispositions, mergers) and integrate these into the compliance cycle.
Recruit, hire, train, and motivate a high‑performing tax staff, monitor workload and productivity, and provide coaching and disciplinary guidance.
Communicate expectations, provide timely feedback, and support career development plans.
Perform tax research, audits, and assistance during external audit defense.
Represent the company professionally at all times and perform other related duties as needed.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting (master’s preferred).
At least 6 years of related tax experience, including partnership taxation and public accounting (2+ years). Prior supervisory experience is beneficial.
Strong analytical, communication, and follow‑up skills with solid knowledge of partnership, corporate, federal, and state taxation.
Proficient in spreadsheet and database use; exposure to Onesource Income Tax and FAS fixed assets preferred.
Ability to manage concurrent processes, reassess priorities, anticipate workload, and maintain flexibility.
Clear written communication skills for presenting findings.
Salary & Benefits Salary: $150,000 – $184,000 per year, plus a discretionary 16% annual bonus. Starting pay will be based on skills, experience, and qualifications.
